English

What do I develop?

You develop lots of skills with English! Learning English not only teaches you to read and write well, but it also allows you to understand the world around you! As an English student, you will be equipped to take on a huge number of tasks, like decoding any verbal or written documents, interacting in an intellectual manner with any prospective employers, holding meaningful conversations with a developed choice of vocabulary and presenting a persuasive argument.

Through these skills, and more, English will develop very desirable qualities and a maturity which will allow you to analyse the people and events around you. You have the opportunity to read classic pieces of literature, as well as some modern favourites, to learn how the great authors honed their craft, which will allow you to explore your own writing skills. In short, English helps you to understand and be understood. Crucial!

How is this relevant to my future?

Employers and prospective academic institutes hold English qualifications in incredibly high regard. English students learn the writing, reading, analytical and speaking skills that will allow you to tackle almost any course in the future. All employers place a great amount of importance in how you conduct yourself in an interview situation. How you present yourself verbally is vital to clinching the job of your dreams.

Therefore, elements of the English course, such as reading, writing and spoken language, allow you to develop these skills so that you are better prepared for such situations. This is why so many employers and further education institutes want to know your English GCSE grades… it is that important!

This could be you!

Adam Whittaker is from Liverpool and has used his English qualifications to pursue a career in teaching English in China.

Adam found his job in China through an online advert that he saw on social media. He messaged the company, applied and got an interview for the position. During the interview, they assessed his ability to write and communicate effectively. As it was an international school, he incorporated other skills, such as drama and dance, to help the children to learn.

Whilst teaching English abroad, Adam earned around £2800 a month which was significantly more than he was earning at his drama club in Liverpool. He also got to experience some of the fantastic things that China has to offer, such as the Great Wall of China. This experience has also helped him to develop as a person, creating a number of friendships with people from around the globe and experiencing a number of different cultures.
