Current competency level: planning ____ progressing __X__ demonstrating ____
How I demonstrate(d) this competency:
As an EMT, you are trained not only to handle complex physically life threating situations, but also situations in which a person is displaying significant psychological distress that could be considered harmful to them or to others. In addition, being able to consistently display respect, compassion, and professional ethics towards others who may differ from you is of the upmost importance as an EMT.
Why it's important:
In healthcare, patients might not only have some sort of physical ailment but may also be suffering from conditions or situations that one might not be able to physically observe, like a mental illness. To be not only a competent provider, but an excellent provider, is to provide care to all aspects of a person, including those outside an immediately obvious and observable physical issue.
What this says about me:
I believe that I have shown the ability to solve issues regarding human behavior, and that I am capable of becoming increasingly competent and aware of this topic as I grow in my professional career.
What I learned or how I grew from this experience:
I have become someone who tries to see past the surface of a person, and instead try to see people in ways that go past their physical state, and evaluate people as a whole.
How this prepared me or influence my interest:
I believe that this has prepared me for a career in medicine by growing my ability to care for people in ways that go beyond just treating an illness, and instead also looking for ways to positively impact patients with every interaction.
My plan(s) to develop this competency:
Next steps: Find a job after graduation, especially one related to healthcare, and continue to learn more about human behavior and psychology
