How I demonstrate(d) this competency:
In the field of emergency medicine, one must often operate under stressful environments that are not usually seen in the hospital setting. During my career as an EMT, I have had experience with making decisions under stressful situations, and being able to adapt to the environment so that effective healthcare can be administered. Additionally, through my experiences in mission work and studying abroad, I have improved upon and proven my ability to be adaptable to different and changing environments, and how to be resiliant in the face of adversity.
Why it's important:
Adaptability is an important characteristic to have as someone who works in healthcare. This is because stress is an almost ever-present factor in healthcare, and one must nevertheless be able to operate effectively and with quality judgment.
What this says about me:
I believe that I show adaptability in many aspects of my life. I show adaptability in completing schoolwork, in finding opportunities to build my resume, and even in social situations. Adaptability is a characteristic that has become part of my everyday life.
What I learned or how I grew from this experience:
I believe that I have learned that even though our circumstance may be not the one we desire, quality work must be accomplished regardless. I have learned the skill of persistence, and how to not give up, especially when things get hard.
How this prepared me or influence my interest:
I believe I am more prepared for a career in medicine because I am better at making quality judgments, and performing effectively, even under undesirable circumstances.
