Cognitive and Behavioural Approaches in Education: A Series of 4 Webinars
This webinar series offers delegates new ideas, tools and skills based on sound psychological principles that can be used in everyday conversations with children and young people who are struggling with negative thinking in challenging situations.
Each webinar can be accessed individually, perhaps if the delegate has wider knowledge, but it is best used alongside the 3 other associated webinars in numerical sequence if the approach is completely new to the delegate. There are opportunities for practice and or reflection/discussion throughout so it is recommended to do the sessions with a companion or as part of a group. It also works with individuals who can reflect about young clients as they go. It will be helpful to download any supporting materials in advance and/or to have a pen and some paper handy.
Cognitive and Behavioural Approached in Education, Webinar 1, is an introduction to using skills, tools and ideas from the psychological approach in everyday practice.
This Webinar introduces the concept of cognitive and behavioural approaches, the link between thoughts, feelings and behaviour, then focuses on the core elements of ‘thinking errors’ and intervention tools to identify negative and positive thinking cycles.

Cognitive and Behavioural Approaches in Education, Webinar 2, introduces the Socratic Dialogue method for having ‘guided discovery’ conversations with children and young people who are stuck in negative thinking cycles.
Observe how the method targets the thinking errors introduced in Webinar 1 and gently guides the young person towards an alternative and more positive perspective of their situation. For a summary of the various types of Socratic questions, follow (insert link).

Cognitive and Behavioural Approaches in Education, Webinar 3, takes a deeper dive into both methods from Webinar 1 and 2.
A unique ‘cognitive restructuring’ tool is provided to assist your conversations with a child or young person as you help them to alter their skewed and negative thinking regarding a challenging situation that they face. A blank tool can be download (insert link).

Cognitive and Behavioural Approaches in Education, Webinar 4, moves the emphasis from negative thoughts to negative, anxious and avoidant behaviour by introducing the use of avoidance hierarchies and graded exposure.
Where the child or young person’s negativity is founded on fear or anxiety (as is often the case in school avoidance), this approach is very successful in helping the child or young person to overcome the fearful situation. There is a guidebook attached to this webinar which can be downloaded (insert link).
