Financial Aid can include everything from gift aid (free money in the form of scholarships and grants) to earned money (like Federal Work Study) to student and parent loans (money you borrow and pay back over time).
Financial Aid can come from an institution of higher learning itself, the Federal Government, your state government, or outside agencies and sources.
There could be several different things you need to apply and several deadlines you need to keep track of.
Always consult with the Financial Aid Office at the schools you are interested in for more information and assistance. Below are several resources to help you find the most money for school.
Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), Maryland College Aid Processing System (MDCAPS)
MHEC is a Maryland state government agency and the State of Maryland's higher education coordinating board. It is responsible for establishing statewide policies for Maryland public and private colleges and universities, as well as for-profit career schools. MHEC also administers State financial aid programs that impact students on a statewide basis. For more information about the various scholarship, grant, and loan repayment programs available through MHEC, click to the following link: https://mhec.state.md.us/preparing/Pages/FinancialAid/descriptions.aspx
Check some of the following links to read about how the Maryland Higher Education Commission can help you pay for your in state college tuition!

FASFA Opens 10/1
You can create FSA ID and start the FAFSA on 10/1 at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa (the sooner the better)
Deadline to receive any FASFA funds from the State of Maryland: March 1st
Highly recommend adding at least one Maryland public school to FAFSA as a safety net and possible additional financial aid
You should create an MHEC account: https://mdcaps.mhec.state.md.us
If applying to a highly selective school/ivy league, be sure to visit collegeboard or see link below to fill out the CSS Profile (additional money for college – fee applies)
FREE Application for Federal Student Aid
To apply for federal student aid, such as federal grants, work-study, and loans, you need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Completing and submitting the FAFSA is free and easier than ever, and it gives you access to the largest source of financial aid to pay for college or career school.
In addition, many states and colleges use your FAFSA information to determine your eligibility for state and school aid, and some private financial aid providers may use your FAFSA information to determine whether you qualify for their aid.
Deadline to receive any funds from the State of Maryland: March 1st
CSS Profile
(CollegeBoard)
The CSS Profile is an online application that collects information used by nearly 400 colleges and scholarship programs to award non-federal aid. (For federal aid you must complete the FAFSA, available Oct. 1 at fafsa.ed.gov.) Some colleges may require the CSS Profile from both biological/adoptive parents in cases of divorce or separation. Check to see if your school requires the CSS Profile before you apply! More info in the link below.
