The Terrapin Education and Research Partnership is a supplemental classroom program, operating under a MD DNR permit. Northern Diamondback Terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) are placed in classrooms in October. Students research the natural history of our state reptile, collect weekly growth data, make behavioral observations, and record husbandry protocols. Growth data are also collected during tagging just prior to release on the beaches of Poplar Island in May and June. The terrapins are implanted with a microchip for identification. Only one terrapin per school.
Horseshoe Crabs in Classrooms
Raising Horseshoe Crabs in the Classroom is a program of the state of Maryland DNR. It involves teachers & students in raising newly-hatched horseshoe crabs in the classroom and monitoring conditions for their growth and development. The project was launched in 1999.
Students in grades K – 12 raise trout from eggs to fingerlings and then release them into a state-approved cold water stream or lake. he Maryland “Trout in the Classroom” program has developed a partnership between the Potomac-Patuxent Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Department of Natural Resources. DNR’s Aquatic Resource Education (ARE) Program has provided background information on several trout species, as well as lesson plans correlated to the Maryland State Curriculum and Environmental Literacy standards. In addition, teachers wishing to take part in the program can apply for an ARE grant to cover the cost of equipment and other expenses.
