The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program allows teachers, students, and the public to contribute to real-world scientific research. With the free GLOBE Observer app, you can Step Up For Community Science by collecting important data about mosquito habitats in your backyard! More importantly, you can take action by eliminating any mosquito habitats you find.
Why study mosquitoes and their habitats? Mosquitoes are a climate change indicator. As Earth warms and our climate changes, mosquitoes are expanding their traditional ranges and moving into new territory. Mosquito season is getting longer too, with more favorable early spring and late fall weather allowing the insects to thrive.
Some types of mosquitoes are vectors of diseases that can be dangerous for humans and other animals. Researchers carefully monitor the spread of these mosquitoes and study the implications for human health.
Watch the embedded video presentation with GLOBE scientists Dr. Rusty Low for more details on why it's important to study mosquito habitats and why researchers need help from community scientists like you.

The Mosquito Habitat Mapper project includes four steps, two of which you can do without any specialized equipment:
Locate potential habitats and record observations - this can be done with only your smart phone or tablet and the GLOBE Observer App. This is the only required step to record your data in the GLOBE Observer App. The next steps are optional.
Sample and count mosquito larvae - you'll need something to collect water samples, like a cup or a turkey baster. You might also need a shallow container to make counting easier.
Identify mosquito larvae - you'll need some type of magnification to get a detailed look at your mosquito larvae. GLOBE recommends a clip-on microscope / macro lens attachment for a smart phone or tablet.
Eliminate mosquito habitat - this part is easy; just pour out or cover the water source so mosquitoes can no longer use it to breed.
Be sure to check out our safety tips and Be Prepared when heading outside.
GLOBE Data Visualizer - See data uploaded by other community scientists all around the GLOBE. This web page includes a tutorial on how to use the GLOBE Data Visualizer, where all GLOBE data (including your observations!) can be found.
Mosquito Habitats Resource Library - GLOBE provides an extensive list of videos, readings, and activities related to mosquitoes and mosquito habitats. Build a mosquito trap, learn key anatomical features of different species, or learn how NASA uses satellite data to predict disease outbreaks.
