Creating Art in Nature: While drawing, writing and painting are common mediums used in the outdoors, creating art out of the nature around you is also an option. Let's explore different mediums and create art.
Meet a Tree: In this tree journaling activity, students pick a tree that stands out to them, spend time “meeting it” in different ways, and record their findings in a journal. This activity can be recurring, with a new prompt each week, or simply done once.
Mindfulness in Nature: Practicing mindfulness in nature is a great way to connect with the environment around you and relax. In this activity, we will use our 5 senses to be mindful in nature and learn about the natural world around us.
Photo Scavenger Hunt: Upgrade the classic scavenger hunt by doing a photo scavenger hunt outside! Students can take photos of each item on the list and upload their photos to a Google Classroom, Flipgrid, or any other platform of the instructor's choosing.
Alphabet Photography: Head out in nature and find the 26 letters of the alphabet composed of biotic (living) factors. For example you may find three twigs that look like the letter A or you may be lucky enough to see a gentle garter snake go by in the shape of an S.
Backyard Soil Identification: Students explore the soil in their backyard/ neighborhood in a hands-on learning activity.
Sound Mapping: Students use their senses and topography skills to create a map of the sounds that can be heard in their local habitats.
Designing the Perfect Park/Forest/Garden: In this activity, students will design their ideal greenspace, and share it with others. Themes include art, engineering, and writing.
Climate Change Data as Art: Take inspiration from the work of artist Jill Pelto and transform a climate change data visualization into a work of art.
Composting and Decomposition: Students learn about the processes of composting and decomposition to discuss or create a community composting project.
