The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program allows teachers, students, and the public to contribute to real-world scientific research. With the free GLOBE Observer app, you can Step Up For Community Science by collecting important data about cloud coverage. You can even compare the clouds you see overhead to real satellite images. All you need is a smart phone or tablet, the free app, and 10 - 20 minutes to head outside!
Watch this quick video from The GLOBE Program to understand why researchers need your cloud data.
Practice estimating percentage cloud cover before heading outside to make observations. Watch the video or read the instructions here.
You will need:
Blue paper
White paper
Scissors (optional)
Glue (optional)
Download The GLOBE Observer App and create your free Globe.gov account.
Watch the embedded video to the left for a quick overview of how to make your own observations. You can also find detailed, step-by-step instructions on the GLOBE Observer Clouds webpage.
Head outside to make your first cloud observations! Be sure to check out our safety tips and Be Prepared.
GLOBE Data Visualizer - See data uploaded by other community scientists all around the GLOBE. This web page includes a tutorial on how to use the GLOBE Data Visualizer, where all GLOBE data (including your observations!) can be found.
GLOBE Clouds Resource Library - This resource library includes several family-friendly crafts and activities related to clouds.
