B-Shift remained busy throughout 2025 across many areas in the County. Some of the main areas are similar to years past, such as phase 2 training for new members who have just graduated from the academy and on-the-job training for new chauffeurs, paramedics, company officers, and battalion chiefs. B-shift has also placed significant focus on core competency training, ensuring we remain proficient in our basic skills. There are many more training topics that were covered throughout the year, too numerous to list.
B-Shift responded to many notable emergency incidents, with one very noteworthy incident being a cardiac arrest, which our Jones Fire Station (23) responded to. The patient involved in this incident was an active AACoPD officer who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. The members from 23 performed several rounds of high-quality CPR before obtaining ROSC (Return of spontaneous circulation). Since the incident, the Officer has fully recovered and is back to work serving Anne Arundel County!!
B-shift would also like to highlight two individuals:
FF/PM Chris Baker is a team player who consistently puts in the effort to be a better Firefighter/Paramedic. As a medic, he routinely mentors paramedic students during their ride-alongs, spending time going over procedures and concepts with them. He is also a tactical medic, spending his personal time training and working on tactical assignments with the County Police Department. Finally, as a firefighter, he actively participates in the suppression rotation and continually receives positive feedback from officers and crews alike for his strong work ethic and solid skills.
In addition, I would like to highlight FF/PM Hunter Hancock. Although Hunter is a newer member of the department, he goes above and beyond to learn and perfect his skills as a Firefighter/Medic. He has an exceptional bedside manner with patients and shows true compassion and empathy. He also takes extra time to mentor ride-alongs and other junior members of the company. Hunter actively participates in the suppression rotation and works hard to train in both EMS and suppression skills. These two individuals are both exceptional Firefighter/Paramedics and are both among a handful of stars on B-Shift.
B-Shift said goodbye to one of the greatest this past year. Battalion Chief Rusty Hallock retired after 37 years of service with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. Chief Hallock was a mentor, leader, and friend to many. He will be missed!
