The Student Support Centre

From time to time, Special Education teachers may request to meet with the students they support on their rosters. Meetings take place in the Student Support Centre and this allows the teacher an opportunity to provide direct instruction on any alternative expectations that the student may be focusing on, or such things as time management or organizational skills. Students will be provided with slips to return to class. Classroom teachers will also use slips for students to come to Resource for assistance with the details of what they need to work on. when the students return to class they will return with the slip from the teacher and the information of what was accomplished during the time they were in Resource.

Academic assessments completed by Special Education teachers are administered in a quiet environment in the Student Support Centre area.

The Student Support Centre is available to all students who access Special Education services. The Support Centre is a place where students can work on assignments and homework quietly and without distraction, or write tests or evaluations which may require clarification, assistive technology support or extra time. Students are encouraged to plan ahead when signing up to work in the Support Centre. Once tests and quizzes are announced, students should connect with their Special Education teacher if they wish to write those types of evaluations in the alternative location with extra time. While it is ideal for students to remain with their subject teachers for evaluations, if the accommodation(s) cannot be facilitated in the regular classroom, Special Education Department staff are happy to assist. If a student is wishing to come to the Support Centre to work on homework or in-class work, he/she should remain in their classroom until the teacher has completed the lesson. Under no circumstances are students encouraged to miss class time or direct instruction from the subject teacher.

The Support Centre is supervised each period by at least one member of the Special Education Department teaching staff, usually two. During this time, the teacher will circulate throughout the room, providing students with support either with the technology being accessed or by answering any questions students may have related to the work they are completing.
