Special Education Dept. Staff

The Special Education Department is dedicated to empowering students to work towards independence and a strong sense of self-advocacy. 

Special Education teachers take on a schedule that includes a combination of teaching credit and non-credit bearing courses (e.g. Tutorial, Learning Strategies, Functional Life Skills) and Core Resource and Functional Life Skills monitoring. In addition, the Special Education teacher: 

• provides diagnostic assessments (as needed) to determine a student's area(s) of strength and need

• supports and collaborates with the classroom teachers in the development of course programming and provides advice about appropriate materials and resources

• maintains on-going communication with students, classroom teachers, parents, Guidance and Administration

• regularly tracks the progress of the student on his/her respective roster

• works with students and parents in the development of an IEP where students have been formally identified through the IPRC process

• provides direct instruction for student on his/her roster on specific goals or alternative expectations stipulated on the IEP

• supports students receiving accommodations for EQAO evaluations in grades 9 (mathematics) and 10 (literacy)

• liaises with a variety of community agencies and services and YCDSB personnel

Students are RARELY withdrawn from class by Special Education staff unless they have an appointment with their assigned teacher. Appointments generally relate to IEP feedback, academic assessments, direct instruction related to areas of need or periodic "check-ins".
