Section 06 - Responsibility & Procedures for Publicity

6.1 RESPONSIBILITY FOR PUBLICITY:

The responsibility for publicity rests on the coach. The coach owes it to his team to see that they are recognized for their efforts. Athletes enjoy receiving publicity and when it is used effectively, it is a tremendous means for motivation. Publicity reports shall include information pertaining to post game, pre-season and post season.

6.2 PROCEDURES FOR PUBLICITY:

The coach shall report directly to the news media.

The Junior High coach shall have:

a. Articles/announcements in the school bulletin before and/or after each contest.

b. Articles in the school paper. (Exemplary)

c. Scores reported (email or phone message) to the Building Athletic/Activity Director’s office before 9:00 am on the school day after the contest.

WVHS ATHLETIC/ACTIVITIES MEDIA RELATIONS

6.2.1 Call in scores and pertinent stats/highlights (the more kids names in the paper, the better) to the Yakima Herald-Republic, win or lose, home or away (our fans want the information and so do parents/ grandparents for scrapbooks).

6.2.2 Call in scores to the two televisions stations (KIMA/KEPR, KNDO/KNDU). The more publicity for our programs/kids, the better our community relations/visibility.

6.2.3 Try to be balanced in your reporting by giving some of the other side of the story (how did other team/locals do?)

6.2.4 Call before going home (if on the road, ask for a cell phone before leaving if you don’t have one or wish to use your own, while the details are fresh. Avoid having a manager call in the scores/details. Most often, the paper would like to hear your perspective of the game/meet/ match and possibly a quote. Remember to choose your words wisely, as what you say reflects on all of us here at WVHS in the eyes of the community.

6.2.5 The Big 9 League’s “standard operating procedures” require a phone/fax/email of results to the Tri-City Herald, as well as the Wenatchee World. As a courtesy if you are hosting a large meet, a fax/email to the local paper of each attending team with the meet results, both team and individual would be a goodwill gesture that would possibly keep those teams returning every year.
