Math Department Computing Appropriate Use Policy

The Math Department's computing facilities are subject the University's Responsible Use policy. This document is intended to augment, but not replace the statements in that document.

Examples of appropriate use of web and email services are:

  • preprints

  • course materials

  • "de minimus" personal use (eg: photos)

Examples of inappropriate use of web and email services are:

  • web hosting for non-UW groups (eg: charities, political groups)

  • filesharing (eg: mp3's, BitTorrents)

  • weblogs

  • email solicitation for donations to non-UW groups

  • any potentially offensive material

We recognize your right to have opinions on politics, religion, to engage in charitable activities, and so on. However, we ask that you pursue these activities using private email accounts and web services.

Like any employer, UW must maintain standards of use for its resources, protect itself from liability, and ensure appropriateness of its web pages. We ask your help in complying with these goals.

Those not in compliance by July 1, 2005 will be warned.

Egregious violations or failure to address such warnings may result in indefinite suspension of computer privileges.
