Week of May 15th

With an interesting twist to remote learning, the kids are working on ELA and math a lot more than they would have been at this time of year in school. Normally, we are knee-deep into our Innovations Fair planning and creating innovations and are also having double sessions for music in preparation for the 4th grade music show. When life gives you lemons...

Our math unit on conversions, both metric and customary, is going well. The kids have shown me they have a pretty good grasp moving from centimeters to meters and back again, same for feet and inches. We will continue this upcoming week and then move to symmetry for our last unit of the year. I have enjoyed the challenge of delivering instruction in a whole class setting on Zoom. I am impressed with how the kids are both processing the information and working within the platform as well. In ELA last week, the kids wrote chapter 3 of their informational book on the Industrial Revolution. We moved away from research and asked the kids to write a narrative from the point of view of someone living through the revolution. It is a great way to circle back to the beginning of the year when the kids wrote a realistic fiction piece for our first writing unit. We will wrap up the book this coming week and are planning a fun project for the kids to end their ELA year.

Really hard to believe there are only 3 weeks of remote learning left. Really hard to believe we are about to start week 9 of remote learning. Really hard to believe it is the middle of May. Really hard to believe how well the kids have persevered throughout this entire experience. Really hard to believe (and sad for me to think) I will be saying goodbye to this class (insert tears here) in less than a month.
