Week of January 17th

What a fun Friday! The kids wanted a fort party for their Warm and Fuzzy party so that's exactly what they got. We added PJ's and stuffed animals, games and music. I am pretty sure that everyone had a good time and it was certainly a nice way to end our week.

I was very proud of the kids focus and stamina during MAP testing. They appeared to try their best and to take it seriously and that is all I could ask for. It is behind us until spring and we will be back to a more normal week next week in terms of our academic days.

Math continued with our study of area and perimeter. We worked on identifying the length of missing sides of squares and rectangles and then figuring out its area and perimeter. We moved to composite figures which are a little trickier and will end our unit next week with a post test on Friday. From there we move on to fractions as our next math unit.

We are almost finished with our first Social Studies unit. We spent the week reading articles about the automobile and taking notes on our graphic organizer. We continued to practice attacking a non-fiction book differently than a novel and the kids have really learned the different approaches and why each makes it easier to comprehend the material. In writing we wrote multiple introductions for our essays with the express purpose of analyzing them and choosing the one which works best.

Lastly, we honored Dr. King on Friday with a discussion of his life and by writing peace poems in his honor. These will be displayed in our hallway and will serve as a friendly reminder of how to treat and judge others.
