With only two weeks into the outdoor track season, the high level of energy, excitement, and running drive is evident among the student-athletes of William H. Hall High School. I am proud to say that I have not witnessed one runner from either the distance or sprinting spheres or one thrower or jumper complain even once about training in the fluctuating New England weather. As we look ahead, these warrior athletes will have to channel their strong, focused attitudes if they desire another Class L State title in this school year.
Honestly, though, I do not doubt our current team’s mental fortitude. For example, during last week’s Saturday morning practice, with precipitation of mixed sleet/rain/snow, senior distance runner (and XC captain) Kory Powell yelled in the boys’ locker room, “I cannot wait to run!” Initially, I questioned the exclamation, thinking to myself, “How could anyone want to run in such miserable weather conditions?,” but I realized that weather is neither an enemy nor obstacle for the Hall High School runners. We are the enemies to the weather! No matter if it rains, snows, or hails shot-put balls of ice (track reference there), we will still run and strive for success!
