Graduation
Applying for Graduation
Planning on Graduating Soon?
You can start the graduation process up to a year before your intended graduation term. It is best to apply to graduate before your final graduation term so the program can verify your remaining competency credits needed for graduation and register you for the appropriate number of credits.
Notify the Program Manager of the term you intend to graduate.
Apply for the graduation term by going into the Student Center section of Wolverine Access (see instructions on the left).
Verify your personal Learning Plan matches the Progress Report sent to you at the end of every semester. Look closely at the EPAs you have completed and the competencies you requested credit for.
Contact the Program Manager if you notice any discrepancies.
Commencement
MHPE learners are eligible to participate in the main campus Commencement ceremony. Degrees are not actually conferred at the Commencement ceremony. This is more of a celebration instead of a confirmation of graduation. As long as you have applied for graduation, you are eligible to attend one of the ceremonies.
Graduation vs. Commencement
The University of Michigan has 3 graduation terms (Winter, Summer, Fall) and 2 Commencement ceremonies (Spring in April or May), and Winter (in December)
Graduation
Learners are approved for graduation only after they have submitted their last EPA and the Assessment Committee audits your Learning Plan to verify you have completed all degree requirements. Depending on when your last EPA was assessed, this may not happen until after the Commencement ceremony. The steps in the process are detailed in the map below.
MHPE Degree Approval Process Map
Once your degree status is set to "awarded" the registrars office posts ("confers") your degree to your official transcript. You should receive your diploma approximately one month after the registrars office posts your degree. If you have not received your diploma and it has been over a month since your degree status was changed to "awarded" in Wolverine Access, contact Dawn Harris (dmharris@umich.edu) to follow-up.
Commencement
Since the U-M main campus Commencement ceremony is so big, you will not "walk", have your name called, or receive a diploma. It is more a time to celebrate all you have accomplished with your friends and family.
How do you get listed in the Commencement program?
The Commencement program contains a list of students who have applied for graduation by a specific deadline. Some students who apply after the deadline may not make it into the program but are still eligible for graduation. There are some students listed in the program that may not graduate until the following semester.
