Program: The summer internship program is a program I started in 2014. Undergraduate students from across the country and high school students from Delaware spend the summer of a given year learning research techniques and programs we have in the lab.
Hello, my name is Asvika Gobinathan, and I am a 10th-grade student at the Charter School of Wilmington. I have a longstanding interest in science, and I have recently discovered a passion for neuroscience and psychology. The complex workings of the brain and how it processes thoughts and functions are truly fascinating to me. I have done previous research in the biology field through different research projects at UD. They helped introduce me to the research side of science which I quickly developed an interest for, however I hope to further pursue neuroscience research. Through this experience, I hope to deepen my understanding of the brain and its intricate mechanisms.
Former Students
Research Interest: My name is Ludan Gbaye, I am a senior double major in Psychology and Spanish at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. My research interests pertain to the African Diaspora in Latin America, and the differences between “race” as a concept in North America and South America.
Research Interest: I am a rising Junior at Case Western Reserve University majoring in Neuroscience. The field of neuroscience to me holds so much unknown territory including many parallels that are relevant to our daily lives in how we behave. At CWRU, I research mPFC in mice with Rett's syndrome but in the Knox lab I have enjoyed learning about hormone effects and PTSD outside of my niche of Neuroscience study. Learning about different techniques and information through studying different aspects of the most intriguing organ in animals is one of the most rewarding parts of studying the brain. In the future, I hope to become a Neurologist and perform research in patients with autism spectrum disorder.
Research Interests: My name is Keerthana Chintalapati and I will be attending Washington University in St. Louis in the fall. This summer, through the Knox Lab, I have been able to gain a deeper understanding of how activation of certain receptors in the brain can alter neural activity and behavior. I hope to continue pursuing neurobiology research in college, exploring topics such as neurological disorders, memory formation, and cognition. What excites me about the brain is that although it’s responsible for life’s most intricate and vital tasks, we have yet to understand this complex organ completely.
Research Interests: For the longest time, I have been interested in the way people think and behave and how much of an impact neurotransmitters have on the behaviors of people. To me, the brain is one of the most complex organs in the human body and I want to be able to learn and research the effect the brain has on the body and the different functions it has on the body. Going into college, I hope to learn more about brain diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
Research Interests: Hi my name is Sooji Kim, and I am currently a rising sophomore at Northeastern University, but I am spending the summer researching at the Knox Lab at UD. To me, the mechanisms of the human body are fascinating, and one of the most impressive parts of the human body is the brain. From its complex neural network to its vital functions, the brain is a very important body part to study. There is still so much we do not understand about the brain, and that opens up many doors for research. I am excited to learn more about the brain and to be a part of such a quickly advancing field. I also appreciate that neuroscience is not only limited to the brain but also involves aspects of psychology and molecular biology, making neuroscience a very interdisciplinary field. I am mostly interested in neurological disorders/diseases such as PTSD, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc. and developing treatments for them. One day I hope to be a physician and use my knowledge of the human body, particularly of the brain, to help patients.
Research Interests: Neuroscience provides a way to study the biological cause for human behavior and provides an insight into why we are who we are. I will be entering my senior year at Purdue University with a major in biological sciences and a minor in psychology. I am spending this summer at UDel helping with the ongoing lab projects and expanding upon my research experience as I apply to medical school. I was particularly drawn to this lab due to its clinical application of PTSD and usage of rodent models to study behavior.
