Mr. Potato Head Create and Play App
Suggested Differentiation: To challenge students by using the following dialogue:“What does Mr. Potato Head need to (see, hear, touch, taste, smell).” The student will then attach the corresponding body part to Mr. Potato Head. Once the student completes this activity they can attach the 5 senses word cards to label parts of his body. Non-verbal students can use the GoTalk 9+ with Mr. Potato Head common core vocabulary.
Little Book of Colors
Have students fill in the following sentence frame: I see___. Attached the color vocabulary cards to their corresponding page.
Challenge students by asking, “What are some other things that are (color)?”
To further extend the activity play a game of I spy.
For additional support the student can use the GoTalk 9+ with the <I can see/hear> communication board. Students can communicate by creating their own I can see/hear sentences using picture icons.
Five Senses Games
Match a real picture (eyes, mouth, hands, etc.) with a corresponding icon
The 5 Senses Folder Game: Match the correct pieces to the correct sense.
Five Senses Dice Game – Label dice with either “body part” or “sense”. Have the student roll dice then match the corresponding “word, symbol, or sensory organ” from a field of pictures, symbols, and/or words.
Skin-Feel
Introduce and explore common core vocabulary with Sensory Glove. Use the attached template to have students create their own sensory gloves to review the words: soft, smooth, rough, hard, and bumpy.
Nose-Smell
Explore smelly jars with our sense of smell. Add a few drops of a “scent” and have students make predictions about what they think is in each smelly jar.
For additional support have students use the communication board to express how things might smell and to communicate predictions for the mystery scent.
Five Senses Song Book
Echo sing various five senses songs along with the teacher. Place the song card on the magnetic tray and encourage students to fill in blanks will corresponding icon cards.
For additional support the teacher can provide a choice of two symbol cards.
GoTalk Music Activity: I have an “Instrument” The music “icon” will give you a sample of the tune. As you sing the song - switch out different instrument names and different action words.
“I have a ______. I have a ______.
Can you play it ______? You can play it ______.”
Using the GoTalk 9+ overlay, students can choose what action they would like the class to do. (i.e, the teacher might sing, “You have a maraca, you have a maraca,” and then request the student to select the action. This board will also allow a student who is unable manipulate the instruments to play the instrument making a selection.
