Unified Sports

Unified Sports is an athletic program that combines students with special education needs with non-disabled peers in athletic events.

About Unified Sports

The program combines approximately equal numbers of athletes with partners on the same sports teams for training and competition. Unified Sports is a valuable program because it expands sports opportunities for athletes and partners seeking new challenges. In addition, Unified Sports dramatically increases inclusion in the school and community by helping to break down barriers that have historically kept people apart. At the same time, the program provides a valuable sports opportunity to individuals who are not presently involved with other sports programs.

What Somers Offers

We have completed our third year of our Unified Sports Basketball Program. Student will participate in after-school practice two or three times a week and be a part of one or two scrimmages with area schools, and one or two larger scale tournaments. The benefits of students helping students’ stretch beyond the court; inclusion, peer support, social conscientiousness and anti-bulling are the results of maintaining a Unified Sports program in our school.

How To Get Involved

When our season begins, students sign-up with the school nurse so that she can check to make sure their physicals are up-to-date.The season typically begins in January; reaching all students in grades 9 -12 within our school has been our goal.
