Adult Volunteer Opportunity

"I found helping students with their career aspirations to be very satisfying. This is our next generation of workers. You are sharing your experiences and insights, and helping a young person decide on a possible route to his or her future." - Job Shadow Host

Why Are Volunteers Needed to Share Their Careers?

Adult volunteers are needed to host students at their workplaces for our job shadowing program. Think back to your teenage years. Who influenced you? How did you decide on a career path? How much help or guidance did you receive? By hosting a student at your workplace you have an opportunity to make a difference in a young person's life.

What Does a Job Shadow Entail?

Job shadows provide opportunities for students to learn about careers in order to make more informed and knowledgeable decisions about their futures. Ideally, a job shadow will provide students with:

    • a brief tour of the workplace.

    • an opportunity to have their questions answered.

    • an introduction to several people and their jobs.

    • an opportunity to experience or observe a variety of job applications.

How Much Time Should I Plan For?

Working professionals are busy people. We are appreciative of any time you can offer. Some job shadows last an hour, others a morning. One to three hours is usually ample time. Students receive release time from school for this learning opportunity.

How Are Students Prepared?

For many students, a job shadow will be their first time in a professional work environment. Students are expected to research their career of interest and prepare a list of questions they hope to have answered. They are prepped on how to dress, and workplace manners and behaviors.
