My name is Masarat Sayeed. I am a Montessori Teacher and I teach Early Pre-K at Greater Lansing Islamic School. I believe that children are natural learners. When given an opportunity and freedom to choose from a well prepared environment, children can teach themselves. My goal in Early Pre-K is to create an environment that drives children to learning where they can learn while having fun, Insha’Allah.
I am excited to be starting my 11 th year at Greater Lansing Islamic School. This will be my 17 th year teaching Pre-K! I am married with 3 children of my own. My son is entering middle school, my younger daughter is embarking on her first year of college, and my oldest daughter will be graduating from college this year. For enjoyment, I love hiking, baking and crafting! Professionally, I am currently taking classes to further my education and I am enjoying every minute of it!
My name is Aza Elmobarak, I was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt. I have a bachelor degree in accounting from Cairo University And worked as a banker for a year then moved to the States. I moved to America in 1999, and now have three beautiful daughters; Alaa who's 18, Salma who's 17, and Cepal who's 11. I've had a lot of experience with children; I've worked as a n assistant teacher for three years in a day care in Iowa, and an additional three years as a Lead Assistant at the People of Church. I really like working with children, seeing and helping them learn and grow as individuals.
Hi my name is Christine Dennings and I am delighted to be the Kindergarten teacher at Greater Lansing Islamic School. I received my bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University and am certified to teach K-8th grades. This is my Third year at GLIS and I look forward to working with the kindergartners.
Mirvat had been a staff member of the school when it first opened way back in 1996. She taught Preschool, Arabic, and was a teacher’s aide. Mirvat is a very kind and caring person who we are pleased to have working with our students.
My name is Nilofer Rangarej, I was born and raised in Toronto and completed my B.Ed there as well. Prior to moving to the Lansing area, I have taught 6 th grade, 1 st grade, and Sunday Islamic School to children ages 5-7. I have 2 children of my own, a 4 year old daughter and 2 year old son. I am looking forward to working with the 1 st graders to have an year of learning and fun!
I am Sadia Akhtar, this is my third year with GLIS. I have Bachelors degree in pure sciences, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology I completed my Master Degree in Political Science from university of Peshawar, Pakistan. I am mother of two kids, my son Shaheer is going to start 9th grade while daughter Zareesh will be in 4th grade in GLIS. I enjoy my spare time with my family.
My name is Jamie Torrey and this is my fourteenth year teaching at GLIS. I teach the core subjects in 2 nd grade. I also teach sixth and seventh grade math. I have been married for six years to my husband, Andrew. We have a 4 year old son, Jackson, who keeps us very busy. I went to college at Saginaw Valley State University and finished my master’s degree at Mary Grove College. I have one brother named Justin and a sister named Ashley. My sister lives in Los Angeles, California and my brother lives in Bay City, Mi. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my son, traveling, and shopping.
My name is Samantha Davis and I teach 3rd grade core subjects as well as 5th and 8th grade mathematics. This is my ninth year at GLIS. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Central Michigan University. I majored in Mathematics and received minors in Reading and Child Development. I completed my student teaching at Lewton Elementary School in Lansing in both third grade and kindergarten classrooms. I enjoy reading in my spare time. I enjoy spending time with my husband; our 4 year-old daughter, Lena; and our puppy, Camden, when not at school.
My name is Karen Elsadek and this is my seventeenth year at GLIS. I've taught a variety of classes here, from Kindergarten to 8th grade, as well as serving as principal for 8 years. Before teaching at GLIS, I taught for nearly 21 years in Vermont in a one room school. I taught K - 8 all subjects. I received my bachelor's degree in education from the University of Vermont and my master's in educational administration from MSU. I love teaching and working with children and especially enjoy teaching mathematics. I have one son, Ibrahim, who will be a senior at East Lansing High School this year. In my free time, I enjoy reading and crocheting. This year I will be teaching Computer class for 2-6 grade, 5th grade social studies and core subjects to 4th grade . Insha Allah it will be a fun and rewarding year!
I was born in Lincoln, Nebraska 1976, raised in Baghdad, Iraq. I received my B.Sc. in biology in 1998 and a M.Sc. in Phytoplankton Ecology in 2007 from the University of Baghdad. In 2004, I joined Nature Iraq, an NGO, and spent couple years as a researcher and Phytoplankton team leader. In 2005, I got involved in many restoration and monitoring projects in Iraq such as the Canada-Iraq Marshlands Initiative. In 2009, I joined the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani as a researcher. It was so exciting to be part of an ecological team working on the restoration on the Iraqi Marshes. During 2011 – 2013, I gained valuable experience and knowledge as a visiting researcher in the Department of Biology, Miami University, Oxford Campus. Since fall 2014, I started as a part time instructor in Miami University, Hamilton and Oxford Campus to teach an Environmental Biology class as well as a Human Physiology class. I am looking forward for a great year. The best times I have are those spent with my family. I love to travel, as travel has always being a part of my life. My philosophy is to never give up easily and always believe in yourself, find the positives and work around the obstacles to achieve your dreams .
