Dear Parents,
The library/technology curriculum includes a unit on the use of the Internet. For research purposes, the Internet provides a wealth of resources that are valuable for educational assignments. The goal of this unit is to allow students to identify strategies for safely and efficiently retrieving information related to the classroom curriculum. Just as students who obtain their driver’s license need to know the rules of the road, young people need to know rules for safely traveling the Internet. Students will spend the next several months earning their Internet Driver’s License.
Two main uses of the Internet include retrieving and communicating information. Activities related to retrieving information include:
Identifying the structure of a web page
Using search engines to locate specific information
Identifying search strategies
Analyzing an Internet address
Evaluating online sources
Citing Internet resources
Developing vocabulary
Activities related to communication will include:
Contacting experts in a specific field
Implementing rules of Netiquette
The Acceptable Use Procedures have been reviewed, and the students’ responsibilities have been emphasized. Parental involvement in online use will be encouraged. Internet access at home is not necessary for students to complete the required activities.
If you have any questions related to this unit, please contact Joe Edel (jedel@saintjamesacademy.org) or Sharon Sansosti (ssansosti@saintjamesacademy.org)
Sincerely,
Joe Edel / Sharon Sansosti
