Scheduling Information

Scheduling the right classes is a very important part of high school. The school counselor is an integral part of this process. The counselors work closely with the students to try and ensure they are taking the appropriate classes to be on track for gradUtion and to also be college and career ready when they finish high school.

Scheduling for the upcoming school year usually takes place in mid-January to early February. Students complete a scheduling worksheet (or complete a google form) to select their core classes, electives and any classes they may need to make up.

Each year, students are required to sign up for 8 credits. This would mean that they have four classes each day on a rotating A/B schedule and a built in lunch period during 3rd block. Students are required to also list at least 2 alternate elective classes in the event they cannot be scheduled into their first choice.

Starting in the 2016 - 2017 school year, the three comprehensive high schools have moved to block scheduling as part of the academy model. The block schedule provides longer class periods each day allowing more time for students for hands-on, project-based learning opportunities. At Case, Horlick and Park High Schools, students have four, 90-minute class periods each day, with alternating A/B days, for a total of eight classes per semester. See examples attached below.

Please be aware that limited schedules changes are allowed, unless a student was misplaced in a class or they did not meet the prerequisite. Students are cautioned to make sure they take the scheduling process seriously and that they talk with their counselor about their future plans so that they can be advised on which are the best classes for them to take. Students are given a copy of their course requests in the spring and advised to make any changes at this time.

The district publishes a course description guide each year, listing and describing the classes offered at each of the high schools in Racine. You can find the 2022 - 2023 guide here. The guide has lots of valuable information about course sequences, graduation requirements, class prerequisites and career information. Parents and students should pay close attention to classes that have prerequisites and that are only offered at certain high schools.

Students can usually pick up their schedules in August. Any schedule adjustments that need to be made (for a missing class period, a conflict, or not having a prerequisite) will be done during schedule pick up days, scheduled days in the summer when counselors will be available, or during the first week of school using the schedule change form. Because students pick their own electives, certain schedule changes are not done, including changes electives, lunch hours and teachers. Students received information on the schedule change policy in the spring and were given the opportunity to make adjustments before schedules were run.
