Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Each year, nearly 26,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is "How Are You Showing Patriotism And Support For Our Country?" The Voice of Democracy is open to students in grades 9-12.

The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2025 competition. National awards range from $1,000 per year to $7,500 per year. Most Valuable Student scholarships are for high school seniors (or equivalent) pursuing a four-year degree, on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 semester hours), in a U.S. college or university, and be a U.S. citizen. All scholarships are in the form of certificates of award conditional upon the full-time enrollment of the winner in an accredited U.S. college or university. Men and women will compete separately and those finalists are then forwarded to district to compete at that level, then hopefully on to state and then national. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. Freeport High School students have been the recipients of a number of Elk Scholarships in the past. The national awards will be announced in April 2025.

The University of Maine is offering Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Scholarships to qualified students applying for Fall 2023 admission. The VAPA Scholarships provide $3,000 annually for students majoring in Visual or Performing Arts at UMaine. Only students who apply by the December 1, 2023 Early Action Advantage are eligible.

The main purpose of the High School Oratorical Scholarship Program is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students. The Dirk Derrick Car & Truck Accident Injury Scholarship is an award for any current or soon-to-be undergraduate student in the United States who has had his or her life altered due to an injury from a car or truck accident, be it their own injury, that of a loved one, or an influential individual. The Dirk Derrick Scholarship has a brief submission process, and applicants will be judged on their ability to convey the lasting effect an auto accident has had on their life as well as their journey to overcome those challenges.

The University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation offers scholarships to chemical, civil, computer, electrical and mechanical engineering engineering technology or Forestry students interested in the paper industry. Recipients are required to complete at least two semesters of PAID co-op internship experience in the industry.

The United States Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senate Foundation will award $1500 or $2000 scholarship grants to graduating high school seniors who will continue their education at an accredited post-secondary college or university. Scholarships of $1000 will be awarded to graduating high school seniors who will attend an accredited vocational, technical or trade school program. This year, the Foundation will be awarding grants nationally to fifty (50) high school students pursuing a college or university education.

The Profile in Courage Essay Contest challenges students to write an original and creative essay that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage. Essay topic: Describe and analyze an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, the year of JFK's birth. First place will receive $10,000, second place $3,000, with three finalists to earn $1,000 each. The Worthington Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships to graduates of partnered Maine public high schools who will be attending a participating Maine college or university. Our scholarship is based upon need and merit while generally ensuring representation from a broad cross-section of partner high schools and considering academic interests and life experiences as described in essays. For students attending a four-year college or university, scholarship amounts can be up to $20,000, which is $2,500 per semester. For two-year community college students, that amount can be up to $16,000, which is $1,500 per semester, with the option to continue on to a four-year institution. Scholarships are renewable for up to eight semesters.
This year they plan on awarding 1,000 scholarships. There is no limit on the number of scholarships awarded to each high school, so all students who meet their eligibility requirements are strongly encouraged to apply!

The Maine Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers will be awarding $2,000 to an outstanding Maine high school senior who plans a career in civil engineering. Civil engineers play a key role in solving many of our state’s pressing problems including: municipal waste disposal, hazardous waste disposal, air and water quality, transportation, and infrastructure. The scholarship will only be issued after a proof of enrollment in a four year ABET accredited Civil Engineering program. The Vegetarian Resource Group each year will award $20,000 in college scholarship money to graduating U.S. high school students who have promoted vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities. Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or fowl. Vegans are vegetarians who do not use other animal products such as dairy or eggs. Three individuals will be awarded up to $10,000. The AGC Maine Education Foundation provides scholarships to students pursuing post-secondary education in engineering and/or construction management. The Mitchell Scholarship online application will open up on December 1. The completed online application, transcript, recommendation letter, and Student Aid Report will be due by March 1. Copies of the college acceptance and financial aid information will be due, if available, by April 1. Mitchell Scholarships are awarded to students who attend 2- or 4-year degree programs at colleges both in- and out-of-state. The strongest applicants demonstrate financial need, academic promise, and community impact. Applicants to AFA’s Teen Alzheimer’s Awareness Scholarship are asked to describe ways in which Alzheimer’s has impacted them. Many stories include years of visiting grandparents at memory care facilities, volunteering at nursing homes, or caring for a loved one at home. No matter the applicant’s story, they are encouraged to apply and help break the stigma of Alzheimer’s and dementia by sharing their story. Applicants are asked to write an essay (1,500 word maximum) or submit a video no more than 4 minutes long, describing the impact of Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia-related illness on themselves, their families or their communities, and what they have learned. The recipient will receive $5,000, with additional prizes awarded for runners up.

The Horatio Alger Association offers multiple scholarship programs available to low-income students who need help going to college and have shown great perseverance in overcoming adversity. Very few students in Maine complete the application, so there is little competition. The GPA requirement must be at least a 2.0. The state scholarship is worth $10,000 and the national scholarship is worth $25,000.

Barowsky Scholars is a new scholarship that aims to support students residing in the state of Maine, who are planning to attend a four-year college to obtain their bachelor’s degree. This scholarship seeks to support students who are interested in honing their careful listening, civic discourse, facilitation, and negotiation skills to become leaders that build trust and find common ground across people and groups with differing views and experiences. Additionally, it provides a four-year renewable scholarship of up to $25,000 based on financial need. The Lighthouse Credit Union Foundation offers six different scholarships that student-members can apply for until mid-March every year. The Maine Society of Professional Engineers will be awarding two (2) $3,000 Scholarships for graduating high school seniors each spring. Scholarships will be paid to the university or college financial aid office rather than the student. The 2023 Atlantic Federal Credit Union Foundation Scholarship program is open from February through March to members who are graduating high school. This scholarship program offers graduating high school seniors the chance to receive five scholarship awards totaling $25,000. To be considered for the scholarship awards, all applicants must fill out and submit an application form, an essay (350–400 words) pertaining to a selected question, and provide a resume and letter of reference. All submitted applications and documents undergo a rigorous review process by the Atlantic Scholarship Committee. Students must be a member to apply.

Established in honor of MES founder, Dick Pierce, who passed away in 2011, these scholarships are awarded based on merit and financial need. The goal is to provide support for students who might not otherwise continue their post-secondary education without financial assistance.
In order to receive renewable rewards, students must earn a minimum of 12 credits per semester and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA. Fifteen (15) $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to Maine residents entering their first year of post-secondary education. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

Alpha One offers an annual Powering Education Scholarship designed to assist people with disabilities who wish to pursue a post-secondary education. Three selected candidates will be awarded $5,000 each for those seeking undergraduate college education as well as graduate programs. The Ruffed Grouse Society of Maine is pleased to offer a $4,000 scholarship to a deserving student who will be starting their education in one of the following areas of study: Wildlife Conservation, Conservation Law Enforcement, Forest Management or a closely related field that is supportive of the broad goals of the Ruffed Grouse Society at both the regional and national level. The OUT Maine Scholarship Fund provides renewable support for LGBTQ+ youth in pursuit of post-secondary education at an accredited, not-for-profit, non-sectarian college, university, or technical/vocational college in the United States. GFWC Maine and MCEAP are working together to raise awareness about elder abuse in Maine. MyImpact Challenge is a civic engagement contest from the Bill of Rights Institute that rewards student service projects with prize awards of up to $10,000. Students plan and implement a civic virtue project and then submit a project report and an essay on how their project upheld a civic virtue. JFLF’s Welding Awards Program supports arc welding education, design and innovation at every educational level, from 4H to high school to college level. Arc welding project submissions are open to all students 18 and younger who are enrolled in any school or training program. Students may submit written reports about the welding projects they have completed. The welding project may be a structure, a repair or an item made for home, farm, shop or recreational use. Students can submit a solo welding project, or work with a team of fellow students (five maximum, with instructor approval). Division I entries are first judged by region and then become eligible for national awards.

The Gates Scholarship (TGS) is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority, high school seniors from low-income households. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to exceptional student leaders, with the intent of helping them realize their maximum potential. Selected Scholars will receive funding for the full cost of attendance to earn a bachelor’s degree, that is not already covered by other financial aid and the expected family contribution, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or the methodology used by a Scholar’s college or university. Costs covered include tuition, fees, books, and room and board, and may include additional personal costs.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Program scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to students in their final year of high school. The 2024 application will be available for students who will graduate during the 2023-2024 academic year. The Profile in Courage Essay Contest - Deadline: January 12, 2026
The Profile in Courage Essay Contest challenges students to write an original and creative essay that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage. Essay topic: Describe and analyze an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, the year of JFK's birth. First place will receive $10,000, second place $3,000, with three finalists to earn $1,000 each. High school students in grades 9-12 attending public, private, parochial, or home schooled are eligible to to submit.
Freeport Lioness-Lions Speakout Contest - Deadline: End of February, annually
This contest is an excellent opportunity for high school students to prepare a speech on important topics facing them and their community. This speech will be presented publicly and judged. It is an excellent public speaking platform for high school students. There are 3 levels to this Speakout contest. Local, Regional and State. MyImpact Challenge - The Bill of Rights Institutes' National Civics Contest - Deadline: May 3, 2026
MyImpact Challenge is a civic engagement contest hosted by the Bill of Rights Institute. Our goal is simple: foster a robust understanding of citizenship and get students active in their communities now! Student service projects can win up to $10,000, with $40,000 in total prizes available to students and teachers. Every project that meets the entry guidelines will be rewarded with a digital Civic Achievement badge.
Driver Education Initiative Award: 'In the Driver's Seat' - Awards Announced: May 3, 2025, September 1, 2025 and January 2, 2026
The essay contest “In The Driver’s Seat” seeks to have applicants highlight the importance of being a safe and educated driver. This scholarship will reward six students for his or her submission dealing with the importance of being a safe and educated driver. To apply, submit an essay of no less than 750 words in Microsoft Word format. Two (2) winners are chosen for each contest: staff favorite, and most voted for. Vote tallies end on the date of the contest deadline. We award a prize of $500 to each winner every contest. There will be three contest submission dates where two applicants will be awarded from each round.

This annual contest is offered to Maine high school seniors to write on a theme related either to a historical milestone or current event. The Library will award $1000 for first place, $500 for second, $250 for third, and five $50 honorable mention prizes. In previous years, selected essays have appeared in the Maine Policy Review, a statewide journal published by the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center at the University of Maine.

Imagine American Foundation – A non-profit organization dedicated to providing scholarships for education, research and training support for the career college sector.
Each year, the Foundation awards scholarships to public high school students for engaging in selfless, voluntary service to their communities. The students are nominated by school staff members and recognized in a public award ceremony. Unlike scholarships that recognize athletic or academic achievements, the Silent Servant Scholarship Award rewards students for benevolence, a behavior and set of values that will sustain their families and communities for decades to come. The presentation of the award, combined with testimony by the recipient, offers a teachable-moment for their peers to be inspired by their empathetic and compassionate example.

4-Day Motivate ME Seminar
Each year more than 120 high school sophomores from all across Maine are invited to participate in this energetic event designed to develop personal leadership skills. Local leaders and decision-makers donate their time and expertise to our seminar program. Students also enjoy a variety of talented speaker presentations, partake in group decision-making exercises, public speaking opportunities, creative problem solving, and hands-on volunteer projects. A dance and talent show are two of the social activities where students have an opportunity to make lasting friendships with their peers. Our goal is to motivate Maine’s future leaders and create a network of civic-minded students who will better their communities through volunteering. Our programs encourage and assist students at critical times in their quest for self-identification and development and we provide give-and-take discussions with thought leaders and role models from across Maine society.
Each school determines its own selection criteria and interest. Once a student is nominated by their school and we receive their complete nomination form, MYL mails a registration packet to confirm their participation. One sophomore student may be nominated from Freeport High School per school year with one alternative student in case the student cannot attend for any reason.
