Freeport High School hosts an annual Semester Abroad/Gap/Summer Information Fair in the fall. Typically these enrichment programs are geared towards sophomores, juniors, seniors, and for those who want to experience the world before entering college or the workforce. FHS invites students and their families all over Maine to come learn more about these opportunities! Want to learn more about studying abroad and available scholarships? Budget-Friendley Travel Opportunities
Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) is a worldwide movement to connect visitors with organic farmers, promote a cultural and educational exchange, and build a global community conscious of ecological farming and sustainability practices.
The Peace Corps brings together volunteers that live and work side by side with community members on locally prioritized projects, building relationships, exchanging cultures and knowledge, and helping transform lives for generations in more than 60 countries.
A Workawayer is a traveller who wants to give back to the communities and places they visit. Open to helping hosts and using the experience to learn and immerse in the local culture.
An AuPair is a young person between 17 and 30 years old who stays with a local Host Family, learns their language and culture in exchange for accommodation and pocket money.
At Worldpackers, you help your host for some hours per week and in exchange, you get accommodation and possibly other benefits, such as meals and local activities. Experience cultural immersion, learn languages, and develop new skills along the way.

AFS Intercultural Programs is an international, voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit organization that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.
Apogee
Summer
Apogee offers summer outdoor adventure travel to teens and young adults. We provide students with exciting and well-designed hiking, biking, community service, writing, and photography programs varying in length from one to six weeks in spectacular locations throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Latin America. Our students travel in small, supportive, mixed-gender groups facilitated by dynamic, responsible trip leaders.
CIEE
Summer/Semester & Year/Gap
CIEE creates opportunities that help bring people together. We foster the development of understanding and mutual respect between communities and nations by promoting the exchange of ideas and experiences. We help give students, teachers, and young professionals from across the world skills that make them active and responsible global citizens. Students can explore a different culture in 30+ amazing destinations across the world. Come home with new skills, newfound passion, a broader perspective – and maybe even some college credits!

We are a group of dedicated experiential educators who create and run worldwide expeditionary programs that hold the possibility of changing lives. Through challenging course design, we create environments that promote self-discovery as well as social, emotional, and intellectual growth. The Oxbow curriculum is designed to match the requirements of the nation’s best public and private high schools and is as committed to academics as it is to art making. Our mission is to strengthen students’ abilities in creative and critical inquiry by combining rigorous studio art practice with innovative academics.
Sailing Ships Maine

Sailing Ships Maine delivers experiential learning programs at sea and creates life-changing opportunities for teens of all abilities and income levels to discover the ocean environment, expand leadership skills, and consider further maritime training. We believe that the experience of sailing on board a tall ship as part of the crew changes teens' perspectives and helps them develop leadership and teamwork skills.
Wolfeboro Camp School
Summer
Wolfeboro is an outcome based, results oriented five-week academic program and a true camp school based in New Hampshire. Wolfeboro exists to provide a transformational academic boost to college prep, middle and high school students.

Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki
Semester
Maine Coast Semester takes your education outside the traditional classroom with four months of intensive, hands-on learning. Students can expect to find themselves in backcountry adventures, science field labs, and daily discoveries in sustainable living. We are a college-preparatory program for high school juniors and seniors who are ready to take their education to the next level with an immersive experience studying ecology.

School for Ethics & Global Leadership (SEGL)

The School for Ethics and Global Leadership (SEGL) is a selective, semester-long residential program for motivated high school juniors from across the United States. We select students who have shown outstanding character, promise for leadership, and scholastic ability; our students also reflect the racial, socioeconomic, and geographic diversity of the U.S.. We have locations based in Washington, DC, Johannesburg, South Africa, and London, United Kingdom.
The Mountain School
Semester
The Mountain School is a semester program for high school juniors located on a hilltop farm in Vershire, Vermont. Each semester, 45 students gather here to live, work, and study for four months. In exchange for half of your junior year, the Mountain School offers a unique educational experience with a dynamic, engaging, land-based program. You’ll have opportunities to challenge yourself and grow as a student, a friend, a leader, and a person. You’ll understand the world and your place in it in a new way.
The Traveling School
Semester & Year
Our all-female environment allows students to focus on academic achievement, develop leadership skills and build self-esteem in a supportive community. Living out of backpacks and duffels, students engage in communities, learning firsthand about the real-life impacts of global issues such as climate change, indigeneity, race, power and privilege.

We “meet students where they are,” and listen carefully to their interests and goals. School Year Abroad
Gap Year
School Year Abroad now operates three campuses in France, Italy and Spain. Our yearlong program remains the only secondary-level option allowing students to live with a host family for an entire academic year while earning U.S. graduation credits and preparing for admission to selective U.S. colleges and universities.

Take a look at this comprehensive list of 50+ scholarships and grants. Gap Year Association is a great resource to browse for financial assistance for a variety of programs, several of which attend our enrichment fairs. Pay close attention to eligibility, specific requirements, and deadlines.
There are two types of Global Navigator scholarships awarded; the Academic Merit scholarships cover 10% of tuition costs (no financial information collected in application); and the Academic Merit and Financial Need scholarships cover from 25% to 100% of tuition costs (financial information must be submitted). If you are applying for an Academic Merit Only scholarship award and decide you want to go on a program, regardless of whether or not you receive a scholarship, you may contact us to have your acceptance be fast-tracked and reserve your spot on program. Programs do fill up as the deadline approaches. If you have any questions, please contact your school or CIEE at hsabroad@ciee.org.

School Year Abroad recognizes high school students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability, commitment to their home school communities and passion for exploring other cultures. In addition to need-based financial aid, SYA offers a range of study abroad scholarships for high school students (some with specific criteria) to assist families with providing their children an outstanding academic experience. Recipients of our study abroad scholarships are not precluded from receiving additional financial assistance should the family qualify for financial aid.

Enrichment Opportunities

Interested in developing job readiness skills, experience in project management, and gaining contacts in the field of natural resources? Come learn, live and serve in the beautiful State of Maine! The Maine Conservation Corps (MCC) is devoted to conservation and environmental stewardship across the state, with multiple positions available throughout the year. Members will serve in teams of three to six, using traditional construction and maintenance skills to enhance hiking, biking, skiing, and other types of recreational trails throughout the state, and engage in other conservation projects to improve habitat and expand access to treasured natural areas. This short-term commitment leads to long-term impacts. You’ll make a difference in local communities while connecting to nature, peers, and yourself. Members will receive a weekly living stipend of $325 (less taxes). Other benefits include a wide range of training and networking opportunities, a Maine State Park Pass, discounts on outdoor gear, and an education award of $2,474.27. Some members may also be eligible for student loan deferment and childcare reimbursement.
