AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE:
ASL I (CP): HS22410 (1 credit)
This is the first semester of American Sign Language (ASL). An introduction to the basic skills in production and comprehension of American Sign Language (ASL) which includes fingerspelling and signed numbers. The emphasis will be on the development of conversational ability, culturally appropriate behaviors and exposure to ASL grammar.
ASL II: HS22421 (1 credit)
This is the second semester of American Sign Language (ASL) and a continuation of ASL 1. ASL 2 continues the development of receptive, expressive ability, allows for the recognition and demonstration of more sophisticated grammatical features of American Sign Language (ASL). Increases fluency and accuracy in fingerspelling and sign numbers. This course is also a Dual Enrollment Class through KVCC. A DE class earns both high school and 3 college credits. This course is open to Sophomores through Seniors and Freshmen with permission from the Principal and teacher testing.
Prerequisite: American Sign Language I
ASL III: HS22431 (1 credit)
This is the third semester of American Sign Language (ASL) and a continuation of ASL II. ASL III continues the development of receptive, expressive ability, allows for the recognition and demonstration of more sophisticated grammatical features of American Sign Language (ASL). Increases fluency and accuracy in fingerspelling and sign numbers, as well as, overall ASL fluency. This course is also a Dual Enrollment Class through KVCC. A DE class earns both high school and 3 college credits. This course is open to Sophomores through Seniors.

FRENCH:
Beginning French (CP): HS22230 (1 credit)
Students develop language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking very basic French expressions by the end of the course. Thematic units may focus on greetings and meeting people, describing people, families, likes and dislikes, time;,weather, food and restaurants, geography. Cultural learning will be integrated into materials and topics addressed in each unit. Students work in the present tense.
French I (CP): HS22231 (1 credit)
Students continue to develop language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Thematic units may include school, clothing, travel, sports, and daily routine. Cultural units will be integrated into the units addressed. Students will continue to use acquired vocabulary and grammar skills previously learned. Students will continue to communicate about events using the present tense.
Prerequisite: Beginning French
French II (CP): HS22232 (1 credit)
Students continue to develop language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Thematic units may include daily routine, health and wellness, cultural and leisure activities. Cultural learning will be integrated into materials and topics addressed in each unit. Students will integrate previously learned as well as new vocabulary as they develop their language skills. Students will continue work in the present, near future, and past tense.
Prerequisite: French I
French III (CP): HS22233 (1 credit)
Students continue to develop language skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Thematic units may include jobs, nature, descriptions of people and narration of daily life. Cultural learning will be integrated into materials and topics addressed in each unit. Students will continue to draw on previously learned as well as new vocabulary as they progress in their language skills. Students will continue to work in the present, near future, and past tenses.
Prerequisite: French II
It is the recommendation of the Messalonskee High School language department that a student complete Intermediate Stage 2 prior to attending selective or highly selective colleges.
French IV (CP): HS22235 (1 credit)
Students continue to develop language skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking, Cultural learning will be integrated into materials and topics addressed in each unit. Students will integrate previously learned and new vocabulary as they develop their language skills. Students will continue work in the present, future, past tenses and conditional.
GREEK:
Greek I (CP): HS22351 (1 credit)
Students learn Greek noun and verb forms and basic grammatical structures that allow for the translation of simple Greek sentences. Students acquire an understanding of the culture of ancient Greece, while strengthening their understanding of English grammar and vocabulary.

Greek II (CP): HS22352 (1 credit)
Students learn Greek noun and verb forms and basic grammatical structures that allow for the translation of simple Greek sentences. Students acquire an understanding of the culture of ancient Greece, while strengthening their understanding of English grammar and vocabulary.

LATIN:
Latin Beginning (CP): HS22330 (1 credit)
Students learn Latin noun and verb forms and basic grammatical structures that allow for the translation of simple Latin sentences. Students acquire an understanding of the culture of ancient Rome, while strengthening their understanding of English grammar and vocabulary.
Latin I (CP): HS22331 (1 credit)
Students continue to learn new noun, pronoun, and verb forms and the grammatical structures necessary for reading and writing the language. They will be introduced to the past tenses and passive voice forms of the verb. Students will acquire a substantial pool of Latin vocabulary words and understand the process of English derivation from Latin, as reflected in the Maine Learning Results. The study of ancient mythology provides a cultural focus of this level.
Prerequisite: Beginning Latin
Latin I (DE): HS22321 (1 credit)
Students learn Latin noun and verb forms and basic grammatical structures that allow for the translation of simple Latin sentences. Students acquire an understanding of the culture of ancient Rome, while strengthening their understanding of English grammar and vocabulary.
Students continue to learn new noun, pronoun, and verb forms and the grammatical structures necessary for reading and writing the language. Students learn to recognize complex structures of Latin grammar through translation of Latin authors. The history of the Roman republican and imperial periods is emphasized, as is the influence of Roman culture on western government, daily life, literature, and art. It is the recommendation of the Messalonskee High School language department that a student complete Latin II prior to attending most colleges.
Prerequisite: Beginning Latin I
Latin II (DE): HS22323 (1 credit)
In this class students will complete the chapters in the Wheelock book and do some reading of original Latin. Topics covered will include subjunctives and their various uses, indirect statement and gerunds.
This course is open to Juniors & Seniors and other students with permission from the Principal.
Latin III (CP): HS22333 (1 credit)
Students apply grammatical training to the translation of Latin Literature. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of style, literary technique, and a consideration of the historical periods of the authors. The works of Cicero and several later Roman authors are read. Students may elect to begin the study of Homeric Greek at this time. It is the recommendation of the Messalonskee High School language department that a student complete Intermediate Stage 2 prior to attending selective or highly selective colleges.
Prerequisite: Latin II
Latin IV Advanced (CP): HS22334 (1 credit)
Students continue to hone their Latin reading skills. The class will read a variety of myths.
Prerequisite: Latin III
Greek II is also taught at this level.
SPANISH:

Students develop language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Thematic units may focus on introductions; describing yourself and others; likes and dislikes; and weather; school life. Cultural learning will be integrated into materials and topics addressed in each unit. Students work in the present tense.
Spanish I (CP): HS22131 (1 credit)
Students continue to develop language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Thematic units may include: family and traditions, sports, shopping, and food. Cultural learning will be integrated into materials and topics addressed in each unit. Students will integrate previously learned and new vocabulary as they develop their language skills. Students will continue work in the present tense and work in the near future tense.

Spanish II (CP): HS22132 (1 credit)
Students continue to develop language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Thematic units may include routine, health and wellness; traveling and vacations; and technology. Cultural learning will be integrated into materials and topics addressed in each unit. Students will integrate previously learned and new vocabulary as they develop their language skills. Students will work in the present and future tenses, as well as the preterit past tense.
Prerequisite: Spanish I or Beginning Spanish (Stage 2)
