Persuasive Speech
Value: 100 points (presentation = 40 points, paper = 50 points, outline = 10 points)
Purpose:
You will choose a topic from the list I provide. Two students may choose the same topic as long as they choose opposite sides. You will write a 3-5 page paper persuading your audience to agree with your side of a topic. There are many aspects to a persuasive speech. The techniques you use to persuade are very important, which is why the formal paper portion of this assignment is worth more than the actual presentation. Please make sure to include all of the criteria listed below.
Criteria:
1. You must use note cards.
2. Do not waver on your position. You can bring up an argument for the opposite side if
you refute it using stronger evidence. (HINT: Use the weakest argument the other side has, that way your counterargument will completely squash it.)
3. Develop strong arguments.
4. Use logos, ethos, and pathos in your speech. Highlight and label these in your outline. Use at least one example of each in your speech.
5. Use either positive or negative motivation to motivate your audience to act (by doing something to help, by telling others about the problem, or by realizing there is a problem).
6. If you want your audience to take action, tell them what to do.
7. Use one of the 4 ways to persuade (look in notes).
8. Include in text citations.
