Book of the Quarter

Requirements:

-All books must be at least 200 pages.

-Choose 3 of the following assignments to complete each quarter.

-You may not complete any of these projects more than once. Each quarter you MUST choose 3 new projects

to complete. If you repeat a project from a previous quarter, you will receive a 0 for that project.

-All typed Book of the Quarter assignments MUST be typed in Times New Roman, 12 point font, double

spaced.

-Organize your writing into logical paragraphs. These assignments should not be written in one long

paragraph. Keep in mind a paragraph does not have a five sentence minimum. Each paragraph should

center around a different overall topic. (Examples: introduction, main idea, main idea, conclusion)

-MLA headers DO NOT count toward your length requirement for these assignments. (Feel free to leave

these headers out.)

Assignment Options:

  1. Summarize the book in poem form with rhyme. You are to include end rhyme, internal rhyme, and/or any rhyme scheme you feel best suits your poem. (minimum 20 lines) (summarize the entire book, not just one section)

  2. Discuss in depth the relevance of the title. What does the title mean? Why do you think it was chosen? How does it relate to the novel? (1 page minimum double spaced)

  3. Write a one minute radio advertisement persuading the public why they should buy and read this book. Why should people read this book? What is interesting or unique about it? Where can they find it? How much is it? (This should be at least half a page in order to ensure you have at least one minute worth of information.) (can also be videotaped and turned into an infomercial)

  4. Q & A - Pretend you're interviewing a character from the book or the author. Write your interview in question and answer format. Elaborate on your answers. They should not be yes/no answers. (At least 15 questions) (You do NOT have to double space this entire assignment. Just double space in between the questions and answers.)

  5. Compare and contrast the book with another you have read. (1 page minimum double spaced)

  6. Compare and contrast the antagonist and protagonist in your novel. What character traits do they both have or both not have? What makes one of the characters more likable than the other? Explain why. (1 page minimum double spaced)

  7. Discuss cause and effect relationships you found in the book. (1 page minimum double spaced)

  8. Write a letter to the author. You may write the letter from your point of view or from one of the character's. The following are things you may include in your letter: questions for the author about the novel, your favorite character and why, your least favorite character and why, your favorite part and why, your least favorite part and why, any suggestions you have for the author's next book, etc. (1 page minimum double spaced) (This should be written in a letter format: paragraphs, a greeting, a salutation, the date, etc.)

  9. Write a letter to one of the characters in the book. You may write the letter from your point of view or from one of the character's. The following are things you may include in your letter: questions you want to ask the character about the novel, why you like or dislike this character, advice or suggestions you have for them, etc. (1 page minimum double spaced) (This should be written in a letter format: paragraphs, a greeting, a salutation, the date, etc.)

  10. As a literary agent, write a letter to a publishing company designed to persuade them to publish this book. Your goal is to persuade the publisher to sign this new book "you" or your client wrote. Using details from the book as well as various persuasive techniques (use of mood/tone, imagery, metaphors, similes, rhetorical questions, repetition, etc.), you are to get the publisher interesting in publishing this new book. (1 page minimum double spaced) (This should be written in a letter format, i.e. greeting and salutation.)

  11. Create a glossary of 15 unfamiliar terms found in your novel. You are to include the passage and page number in which you found the unfamiliar words, the part of speech for each term, and the definition. Next, you will create one sentence for each term using the new word correctly. (include proper in-text citations) (-5 missing passages, -10 missing sentences, -3 missing in-text citations)

  12. Choose your favorite passage from the book. Copy it down and discuss what you found appealing about it. (1/2 page minimum double spaced)(The passage itself does not count toward the length requirement.) Include the page number in which you found the passage. (-2 proper in-text citation)

  13. Top 10 List - list ten things you learned from this book and explain their relevance to the novel. (How did the novel teach you these things?)

  14. Create a PowerPoint presentation which explains the literary elements of your novel. You are to include the following: title slide, protagonist(s), antagonist(s), plot, climax, main type of conflict (one of the five man vs. __________ types of conflict), point of view, setting (place and time period), at least one example of symbolism, at least one example of irony (situational, verbal, or dramatic) (state which type it is), and at least one theme of the story. For each of these, explain anything that someone who has not read the novel before might not understand.

  • You are more than welcome to include additional elements to your slideshow, as long as you have all of the ones listed above included as well.

  • Feel free to organize your slideshow in any order you would like; the list above is not in any particular order.

15. Create a 3D model of an object, person, scene, etc., from your novel which represents or symbolizes

something important from the book. Type a one page explanation describing what was created and how it relates to the novel. (1 page minimum, written in paragraph form)
