Ultimate Frisbee
“Spirit of the Game”
The term “spirit of the game” is described as an attitude that is unique to the game of ultimate frisbee. This is a spirit of sportsmanship, which places the responsibility for fair play on the players. There are no officials. The most important part of this is a mutual respect amongst opponents.
Equipment:
- Field – 70 yards long, 40 yards wide with 25 yard deep endzones
- Frisbee/Disc
- Teams – consist of 7 players per team
Scoring
- A goal is scored when an offensive player completes a pass to a teammate in the endzone which is being attacked.
- Each goal counts as 1 pt
- Games are played to 15 pts
Offense:
The disc is advanced by completing a pass to a teammate (no handoffs)
When a player catches the disc they must establish a pivot foot and cannot run with the frisbee.
The disc may be passed in any direction.
A player catching the disc must have their first point of contact be in-bounds.
The player with the disc must throw it before the defender counts to 10 sec.
A turnover occurs when the offensive team fails to complete a pass. The disc is dropped, knocked down, intercepted, goes out of bounds, or a ten count occurs.
No picks or screens are allowed.
Defense:
Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact sport. Some incidental bumping may occur when two people are going for a frisbee but any contact that impedes a player is a foul.
Defenses can play a man to man or a zone defense. The objective on defense is to block, intercept, or knock down passes.
If a turnover occurs everyone on offense switches to defense and everyone on offense now becomes defense. This switch is called transition.
The defensive player is not allowed to touch the disc while it is in possession of the offensive player.
The defensive player guarding the person with the disc must remain an arms length away.
Tap-In
- Term used to describe the restarting of play when frisbee goes out of bounds or into endzone. Person bringing frisbee back into play should tap the frisbee on the line and take one-step back in-bounds to indicate that the game is restarting.
