Demonstration of olympic badminton play.
Objective: Mens scores go to 15 points Women's go to 11 points. (We will use 15 for all games unless we need to speed it up then we will go to 11)
History: Badminton was said to be developed in China centuries ago. If played at a high level can be a very demanding aerobic exercise. It is currently an olympic sport.
How to Play: (Rules)
1. Serving
A. Can only score when serving
B. Must serve underhanded and contact the birdie below the waist.
C. Server can serve from anywhere behind the 7 ft line on the correct side.
D. Must serve from the right side of the court on all even numbered scores and left side on all odd numbered scores.
E. Serve must be diagonal and clear the 7-ft non volley zone.
F. If the birdie hits the net and still goes over and clears the 7 ft line it is a let and you get a second serve. If it does not clear the 7 foot line it is a fault.
G. Changing up the serve between short and low to long and high can be very effective.
2. Receiving
A. The birdie must be returned by the person diagonal from the server but can be returned anywhere on opponents court.
B. Only one person is allowed to hit birdie per volley
3, Loss of Possession or Faults consist of:
A. Hitting the birdie out of bounds. (line is in)
B. Birdie not clearing the net or going through the net.
C. Hitting the net with body or racket during play.
D. Hitting the birdie before it crosses the net.
E. While serving having a double let. (A Let is a serve that touches the net but still lands correctly in opponents court)
4. Doubles
A. At the beginning of each game the team serving first is only allowed one server. From there on out both people serve for each team.
B. After each point is scored the serving team alternates court sides until the receiving team gain possession.
5. Types of Shots
A. Forehand
B. Backhand
C. Clear...........hit long over opponents head.
D. Smash..........most effective shot in badminton. Hit at a downward angle hard and fast hit either into an uncovered area or directly at the opponents body.
E. Drop...........short and low shot barely clearing the net.
