1. NOTES on Lat and Long
LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE
• Grid lines on maps define a coordinate system (x/y axis) to find an absolute (specific)
or relative (general) location on the planet, in a city, or on an ocean.
• Grid lines intersect each other at right angles, making each square grid a unique,
identifiable, relative or absolute location on a map.
• Horizontal and vertical lines are labeled with numbers and or letters which provides
unique addresses for each grid location.

Types of Grid Systems:
•Grid can be 1)Alpha Numeric (city/road maps), 2)Military Grid System (topographic maps) with 4 or 6 digit references, or 3) Latitude and longitude (cities, countries, world).
LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE
• lines or degrees of Lat and Long, actually measure the angle from the center of the earth,
East and West of the Prime Meridian (0° Longitude) or North and South the Equator
(0° Latitude).
LATITUDE
• They measure distance North and South of the Equator to the poles.
• Imaginary lines, running (drawn) East to West on the globe or map.
• They are also called Parallels (really circles) because they never touch.
• Each parallel is 1° apart or 111 km in distance. • There are 90 lines of latitude in each of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. • There are 180 parallels of latitude in total.• The Equator is the 0°(degree) line of latitude that divides the world
into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres (hemi=half, sphere= circle).
LONGITUDE
• Imaginary lines, or Meridians, that run from the North Pole to the South pole
• They measure distances East and West of the Prime Meridian.
• The Prime Meridian (0°) and the International Date Line (180°) divide the earth into the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. • There are 180 Meridians of longitude each, in Western and Eastern Hemispheres • A total of 360° Meridians of longitude in total.
• International Dateline runs through the Pacific Ocean at 180°W & 180°E.
• They are 111km apart at the Equator, and meet/ touch at the poles.
APPLICATIONS (things it can do) for Latitude and Longitude •Navigation Systems (car/boat GPS) • Geocaching • Milirary, guided weapons •Tagging photos • Transportation, building tunnels, roads • Air travel
• Tracking: Parcel Delicery, Google Maps, Facebook, Apps etc…
