Scholarship & Creative Activity

I have a consistent publication/presentation record over the course of my career, and consider it a privilege to influence practice and enhance learning through inquiry. The vast majority of my research and creative work is self-driven, with myself as first-author or PI. I'm happy to work with others, as you will note from my collaborative projects, publications, and presentations. In general, I believe that my continued curiosity will provide opportunities for learning, research, and service to the community, which creates an ideal training ground for students.

To capitalize on local opportunities, I founded the UTC Tourism Center, which is a research and information hub for reliable tourism data relevant to the Chattanooga region. This project regularly involves undergraduate students in research and has been instrumental in providing Chattanooga and Hamilton County governments reliable information for planning.

I also created a mobile lab to collect EEG and physiological data in situ, during various activities in multiple contexts. The UTC Brainwave Project has produced several articles, many presentations, and has been highlighted in local and national media.

While these are included as part of academic classes, they require a large amount of preparation, creative funding strategies, and many working weekends. Video examples are provided at right. Sample projects from courses that incorporate experiential learning are provided below. I strive to incorporate a service-learning experience into every course I teach, and experiential activities are routine. On average, the following courses include multiple experiences beyond the classroom:
