The UTC Brainwave Project:

Analyzing the impact of Activity and Space on the human experience

Research Purpose:

Primary: To investigate the influence of outdoor environments and outdoor activities on the mental state of an individual providing unique insight through novel procedures and innovative technology.

Secondary: to advocate for urban planning, green space development, and outdoor activity participation as catalysts for mental and physical health.

How it works

WebBoulder.mov
WebMtnBike.mov
  • The climbing video (left) shows increased focus (red) as the participant searched for holds, with increases in anxiety (yellow), and decreases in motivation (orange) when holds are marginal.

  • The mountain biking video (right) demonstrates the moment when a mountain biker passes a slower participant and rides at her desired pace. Approach motivation increases dramatically at this point (00:25). Increases in Meditative state as well as decreases in Anxiety and Focus should be noted. In general terms, at this moment the individual is in a state of ease and enjoyment. Other moments of interest are explained in the video.

Data Collection Tools

EMOTIV Insight EEG Headsets (5-points of contact)

    • This allows measurement of: Delta (δ = .5 - 3 Hz), Theta (φ = 4 - 7 Hz), Alpha (α = 8 - 15 Hz), Beta (β 16 - 31 Hz), and Gamma (γ = 32 - 100 Hz) waves at the five points of contact. These waves were streamed at two times per second and recorded using a custom application for collection.

Fitness Trackers

    • Allows for GPS tracking, Elevation, HR, HR Interval, Galvanic Skin Response(GSR), Skin Temperature.

iPhone

    • For use of "Time-Stamping" the activity in correlation with the brainwave data.

    • Custom Application to compile data as CSV file.

Geographic Information System (ArcGIS)

    • A mapping tool used to display data as it relates to geographic location.
