Create your Classroom

Google Classroom for EDSU 533

IMPORTANT: Be sure to log in to Classroom as a Teacher. Otherwise you will not have the option to create a classroom.

  • Add a photo to your UMass Global Google Account.

  • Choose a different photo or graphic from the one you use in your personal or school Google Account.

  • You must use the UMass Global google account so that your instructor has access to your Google Classroom for grading and critique.

You need your Google G-Suite (previously Google Apps for Education) account information—email and password—to sign in to Classroom. A G-Suite account is a unique account set up by your school and the username resembles myname@myschool.edu. UMass Global email addresses for Google typical include myname@mail.umassglobal.edu. UMass Global students automatically have UMass Global gmail accounts so you will need to use your UMass Global Google account and not your personal account. You can not use your Gmail or any other personal email account to sign in to Classroom. If you don't know your account details, ask your school’s IT or Google Apps administrator. UMass Global student email gives you access to Google Apps for Education and Google Classroom.

Note: We will not be inviting students into this class since this is a university course project. However, you will need to invite your instructor as a "teacher" for grading purposes. You may also invite several of your colleagues as students. You will need to add your teacher and students you plan to invite as "contacts" in your UMass Global gmail account first so that they will show up in your contacts menu for Google Classroom. Only UMass Global gmail accounts can be shared. Your instructor will need to use the UMass Global Google account rather than his/her personal Gmail account.

  • Go to classroom.google.com.

  • Make sure you are in your UMass Global G-Suite account and not your personal account.

  • Enter your UMass Global G-Suite username and click Next.

  • Your G-Suite username looks like myname@mail.umassglobal.edu

  • Enter your password and click Sign in.

  • Click Teacher

Create your Class

  • Click on the plus next to your login name on the right top of the screen.

  • Name the class for a particular subject area or class period.

  • You may choose to use a more general name for a subject area resource site.

  • Click on the "People" tab on the to menu

  • Click on the + for either "Invite Teacher" or "Invite Student"

  • Teachers will be able to edit your work if you invite them as "teachers", but as students they will be able to view, comment, and grade your project at the end of the term. Generally, it's fine to just invite your instructor as a student. Watch for the instructor's directions or preferences in announcements. Share you class code with your instructor for final grading.

    • Email your class code to your teacher or include it in your Blackboard assignment or textbox.

    • See statement at the bottom of your screen - "Invite students or give them the class code."

    • You can use your class code to invite teachers and students.

    • Please remember that you can only invite teachers and students that are in the UMass Global Google Apps domain.

    • In your school account, you would invite students. However, for the purposes of this course, you do not need to invite students.

    • DO NOT USE your personal account or your school account. Use your UMass Global account so you can be graded at the end of the course.

Select a Theme from the Images or Patterns.

Google Classroom does have a gallery of colorful image options and choices for themes. However, this is your opportunity to be creative.

    • Locate a visual that matches your curriculum theme, grabs attention, and provides a visual frame of reference.

    • Upload a photo from your computer or save a curriculum based image you locate on the internet. Save to your computer.

Search for Images that Connect to your Curriculum Content and Theme

    • Do an image search in Google for graphic images related to your topic.

    • To use an image as a banner (top frame) in your classroom, you need find images that are larger than 800 pixels wide and 200 pixels tall.

    • Smaller images can be attached but will not fill up the top frame adequately.

    • Right click (or hold mouse button down) to save images to your graphics or pictures folder.

    • From the Google image search you can typically see the file size ahead of time. Look for a large enough file by checking the file size/resolution.

    • If your image is too small, click on "Dismiss" and try for a larger image.
