Independent Reading Program/Book Challenge

To promote and nurture the habit of pleasure reading, independent reading will be a regular part of each 5th grade homework

assignment. The students will participate in a no-pressure Personal Book Challenge this year to expose them to and encourage them to read a variety of genres.  Students will be expected to read for 20  minutes each homework night.

What you need to know:

    - Students will choose their own reading material, with guidance from the fifth grade faculty if necessary. The chosen book should fit within the genres outlined in the Book Challenge Grid. (attached below)

    - The level of difficulty needs to be carefully considered. Independent reading must flow more easily than instructional material that is       discussed and interpreted in the classroom.

    - As the year progresses, students should keep track of the books read on their challenge grid.

    - Activities will be done in class and as homework on this independent book.

-We will check in with each student about their progress each month.

I appreciate your support in encouraging the independent reading habit.  : )

Below you will find the requirements for the different independent reading assignments given throughout the year. Specifics for each assignments will be attached to the bottom of this page as files when applicable.
