Statement of Practice
& Informed Consent
Lafayette Parish schools offer short-term counseling to students aimed at more effective education and socialization of students within the school community. Parents/guardians or school staff may refer students for counseling, or students may make this request. Should it be determined by the AHS school counselor that more extensive services are necessary, it will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to arrange outside counseling or psychiatric services.
The AHS school counselor will keep information shared during counseling sessions confidential with some exceptions.
· The student expresses intent to harm him/herself or someone else
· There is reasonable suspicion of abuse/neglect of a minor, elderly person (60 or older), or a dependent adult
· A court order is received directing the disclosure of information
If a student is a minor, parents may confer with the school counselor regarding counseling sessions. A release of information form must be completed when parents or guardians are requesting that a counselor share information with a third party, such as a community counselor, psychiatrist, social services worker or physician.
Parents/guardians wanting to meet with their child’s grade level counselor are encouraged to contact them through the school counselor webpage (a link can be found on the Acadiana High School homepage) or call 521-7959 to schedule an appointment.
