WHERE DO I START? That is a frequently asked question by students and parents - We recommend that you start by:
Look at what the college/university(ies) your student may be attending to see what they have to offer to their students - Check their official websites.
Check within "your bubble" as to scholarships that may be offered with programs you or your family members are a part of (employers, services [insurance, utilities, banks, etc.], organizations [4H, KC's, Lion's Club, church, etc.]).
Look for other scholarships through our website or other large scholarship search sites. Here is a spreadsheet of all scholarships that have been shared with us or we have found. (*Note the "search sites" tab has free sites dedicated to helping students find scholarships they may qualify for.)
When in doubt...Google! There are tons of scholarships that can be found just by searching! Just remember there are also scams. Scholarships are to help you get money for college... you should not have to pay a site or someone to help you get a scholarship!
Scholarships are the responsibility of students and their parents. We strive to assist in whatever way we can; however, the days of a multitude of scholarship applications coming directly to the counselor are gone. While some still come to our office, many more are available online. Several Websites to assist are posted below. The spreadsheet above is those that have been have come to our attention. Several Louisiana based scholarships will be posted in the senior class Google Classroom periodically.
(This will continue to be updated as the year goes on, so keep checking!)
FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid
We recommend that all seniors complete the FAFSA. It is required to receive grants, loans, work study, as well as many scholarship programs. Perhaps most importantly, the FAFSA also serves as the primary application for TOPS. The FAFSA has been updated this year will not be available to the Class of 2025 until December 2024; however, parents & students are encouraged to make FSA ID prior to that.
AHS will try to hold FAFSA Completion Events if possible, as well as promote local Financial Aid events in our community!
Beware of scholarship scams! Be careful about information you share with websites that claim to offer scholarships. You should never be charged money to apply or search for scholarships.
TOPS or TOPS Tech
Students should create their "Student Hub Account" to check your TOPS award eligibility. LOSFA recommends doing so by February 1 so any errors can be corrected before Award Amounts are posted in June.
