Unifrog Insights December 2020 Focus: The Netherlands
Unifrog Insight: Interest grows in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is bucking the global trend with Dutch universities enjoying an increased number of international applicants. The Dutch Association of Universities (VSNU) reports an increase in the size of the September 2020’s international intake, despite COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Data from the Unifrog platform suggests this trend will continue. The graphic below shows how - among current students at international schools - interest in the four top destinations has changed over the last year:
The double whammy of COVID-19 and Brexit has led to a significant drop in international students' interest in studying in the UK, with 6.3% fewer UK university shortlists made from March to October this year compared to the same period in 2019.
In contrast, the Netherlands has seen a boost in interest with a 1.7% increase in the number of shortlists being made for Dutch university courses over the same period.
Student guide: Studying in the Netherlands
These four articles are taken from the Unifrog Know-how library, a library of expert student guides on topics including applications, wellbeing, and citizenship. They give students impartial, unbiased advice on:
7 reasons to study in the Netherlands
Student life in the Netherlands
Matching, and admissions requirements and procedures
The difference between Research and Applied Science universities
Teaching resource: Research vs. Applied Science universities
If students have decided on the Netherlands, the next step is to decide whether to apply to a Research or Applied Science university.
This 30-minute activity from the Unifrog Resources library - a bank of plug-and-play teaching resources tailored to each year group / grade - helps students in Years 11-13/ Grades 10-12 to:
Understand the difference between Research and Applied Science universities
Know what to consider when choosing between the two
Create a shortlist of of Dutch university programs

John Cabot University, Italy - Shortened Fall 2020 semester and study visa requirements
University has decided to delay the start of the Fall 2020 semester to shorten the semester to 89 days. This means that students coming from visa-waiver countries such as the United States will not require a study visa to attend university in Italy for the fall.
Classes will now run from September 21, 2020 to December 14, 2020, with Orientation activities beginning on September 19, 2020 - see the updated academic calendar.
By removing the barrier of needing a study visa for Fall 2020, JCU aims to allow all students, including prospective degree-seeking students and study abroad students, more time to make decisions on travel.
As COVID-19 has made acutely clear, international dialogue and cooperation are more important now than ever before. At JCU, our students and faculty come from all over the world, giving our community a unique perspective and allowing dialogue between and among our learners and instructors.
By shortening the fall semester, we hope to give ourselves and our students the best chance at continuing to foster the spirit of globalism that is at the heart of our curriculum.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email admissions@johncabot.edu.

Tilburg University's updates related to COVID-19
The Corona pandemic is affecting us all, including Tilburg University’s application cycle. Due to the challenges posed by the virus we have made the following changes:
Our EU application deadline is extended to June 1
We are more flexible than we normally are about official transcripts and documents; if a student cannot provide a certain document in their application package due to the pandemic, we will consider an unofficial document in its place.
If students meet our admission requirements, they can be conditionally admitted. Deadlines for submitting final transcripts and English language tests can be stretched until later this summer, but are still required for enrollment.
We are currently aiming to start our academic year in September 2020 as normal.
Since the situation is constantly in development, we may update these policies as we go along. Check our website for more information or email internationalbachelors@tilburguniversity.edu.

Cancellations of secondary school exams
If students have already applied and has received conditional admission based on an IB diploma or British A-levels that they will obtain in 2020, the cancellation of the exam sessions of Summer 2020 doe not have an impact on students' eligibility. As long as they obtain their diploma and meet the conditions specified in their letter of admission, they will be unconditionally admitted and they can enrol in their chosen programme in September.
If students have not applied yet, UU encourages students to continue the application process and to submit their application on time, despite any uncertainties.
Application deadlines
The application for students who have an EU/EEA nationality has been extended to 1 (original deadline was 1 May).
Students with a non-EU/EEA nationality (and who will need to apply for a visa) still have a deadline of 1 April.
