We at KCUSD have made the decision and commitment to provide you with training in Safety-Care Behavioral Safety Training, a leading crisis prevention training course that focuses on how to prevent behavioral challenges, de-escalate early and manage behaviors safely. The curriculum is founded upon evidence-based research in the areas of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) which we believe offers our staff and those we serve with the best strategies available for preventing and safely managing behavioral challenges.
Objectives:
Understand how and why crisis events happen, and ways in which we might inadvertently contribute to them.
Prevent crises using a variety of supportive interaction strategies.
Apply simple, evidence-based de-escalation strategies that are effective for any population.
Respond appropriately and safely to dangerous behavior.
Prevent the need for restraint.
Intervene after a crisis to reduce the chance that it will happen again.
Several versions of Safety-Care Training offered by KCUSD.
Safety-Care Basics for staff members that need to de-escalate crisis situations but do not need to used physical management or who do not require explicit instruction in physical safety. The Safety Care Basics course is approximately 4 hours.
Learning objectives of the Safety-Care Basics training:
Participants will learn how to create a supportive and safe environment for students who demonstrate challenging behaviors.
Staff members will demonstrate strategies for remaining safe when students demonstrate challenging behaviors during their instructional time.
Staff members identify aspects of their own behavior such that contribute to student success such as positive interaction strategies, staff emotional reactions, avoidance of power struggles, staff resilience and use of reinforcement.
Learn how to respond appropriately to a student’s triggers and signals, use a safety stance to de-escalate a student and when to call for assistance.
Identify when to designate a lead staff for an incident, the de-escalation process and safety interventions to use during de-escalation.
Identify and use de-escalation strategies; help, prompt and wait.
Practice how to supportively guide a student when needed.
