Week of January 6

Happy New Year, Everyone!

With our two COLD Days, I have adjusted our assignments on my calendar to reflect the two days we were away from school.

Our first lesson in math this week was Ballpark Estimation and Partial Sums. Very tricky for 2nd graders! Here is a little review, if you are seeing troubles at home:

If the question is: 32 + 45 = ?

The Ballpark Estimate would be: 30 + 50 = 80

In Partial Sums we add the tens place first and then the ones, so

First the tens place: 30 + 40 = 70

Then the ones place: 2 + 5 = 7

Finally: 70 + 7 = 77

This is a different way to do addition then we learned, but some kids understand this method better. I tell the kids, "If the directions tell you to do Partial Sums, then you should do Partial Sums. If it says, 'Add' or 'Find the Sum', then you can use any method that works for you."

Have a good week and stay warm!
