For the Week of October 3-7

Welcome to October! This is when I really begin to feel fall.

On Friday, I sent a message from our Key Room Parents about parties and volunteering. If you did not get that message, please let me know. I will forward a copy to you.

Friday was a big day for us in room 112. We opened our class store called the ABCD Store. There were some kids that made purchases which entitle them to privileges like 1st class seating during reading and VIP materials. I am sure there will be lots of talk over the weekend about this. I was really impressed by how well the kids were able to handle their money and knew that they needed change. Calculating that change was a whole different thing, but that will come with time.

In reading next week we will continue to work on retelling or recounting a story. As I do my fall reading assessment, I have noticed how skimpy the kids are with details when the retell a story. So we will spend some more time working on this. It is an important one!

In Math our work next week is about Name Collections, Fact Families, Frames and Arrows and What's My Rule?. These are terms that are pretty specific to our materials (Everyday Math), but they are still important concepts. For example, Name Collection Boxes help the kids understand that you can build or name numbers many different ways. Frames and Arrow and What's My Rule? help us to learn and look for patterns in numbers.

Sadly, our brassica plants seemed to have slowed down their growing even with all of my kind words and fertilizer. We will continue, however, to learn about the lifecycle of plants in Science.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Johnson
