For the Week of November 14 - 18

Post date: Nov 11, 2016 10:1:18 PM

We continue to make forward progress each week. I am already amazed at the things the kids have already mastered. Having said that, we do take some steps back too. Especially in the area of talking. As always, I appreciate anything you mention about this at home.

In reading we are working on Unit 2. We have spent a lot of time talking about the text features of non-fiction. This week we are working on vowel teams for Word Work. This will be a review for some and new learning for others. We will also reading a memoir.

This is a big week in math! We will learning how to add 2-digit numbers together with regrouping. I know that when we were in elementary school we learned one-way at add numbers together. The fact is there are actually many, many ways or strategies for adding numbers together. One way that will be discussed this week is called the Partial Sum Algorithm. Simply said, you add the tens together and then the ones together. This may seem odd to us, but it works! More importantly, for some kids it works even better than the traditional method we learned. Honestly, when I first learned Partial Sum, I didn't like it. It has grown on me and now I use it all the time. By the way, I call the traditional method "Mom and Dad's Way" with the kids.
