Using computers becomes much easier once you learn the basic patterns. Even though the details may be slightly different, these patterns are consistent on any Microsoft computer.
The diagram below summarizes the major patterns in Microsoft Windows 10:
When you first start a Windows 10 computer, there are two basic patterns that you may be presented with:
1. The Lock Screen
The lock screen is designed to lock your computer and hide information from others. It also appears when you first start the computer.
It will show you the current time and date and you can click or press any key to go to the Login Screen.
2. The Login Screen
The login screen controls access to your computer.
You can use a login, PIN or picture password.
You can shut down the computer from the login screen.
If you have a password on your computer, you will be presented with a login screen when you start your computer.
This login screen may be connected to your Microsoft Account or setup as a Local Account.
Explore the startup patterns in Windows by doing the following exercise:
Press <WindowsKey-L> to lock your computer. You will be presented with a Lock Screen.
Press any key or click the mouse. The computer presents you with a Login Screen.
Enter your password if needed and click the arrow to access your computer.
