For this assignment, students will conduct research and write a position paper (using academic voice and MLA format) in which they take a stance on a topic of their choice (from several selected by Mr. Fromme--see below for more details on that). Students' goal is to use the three pillars of persuasion (pathos, ethos, and logos) along with evidence from their research to craft a piece of writing that leads others to agree with their position on the subject.
Students are expected to produce a piece of writing at least 750 words in length for this assignment (not counting MLA headings, title, works cited, etc.) in which they make a persuasive argument that either supports or refutes the claim they are given. The student’s paper must include two properly cited quotes from the student’s research, one supporting the student’s argument and one acknowledging the opposing viewpoint.
The grade for the finished product will be based on Mr. Fromme's assessment of the student's use of technique, style, and organization in his or her writing as outlined in this rubric.
The paper should also include a works cited page (using MLA guidelines and following this sample) including citations for any articles referenced in the paper. Furthermore, students should provide MLA-style in-text citations in the paper.
For this paper students will conduct online research and must cite at least two reputable sources As a result, the works cited page should include at least two entries.
