Students will learn that mathematics is about many things, not just numbers, through our adopted mathematics program, Math Expressions. We will explore several strands of math through cooperative learning groups and individual challenges:
· Number Theory
· Estimation and Computation
· Geometry Exploration
· Division
· Fraction, Decimals, and Percents
· Using Data
· Addition and Subtraction of Fractions
· Exponents and Negative Numbers
· Fractions and Ratios
· Area, Volume, and Capacity
· Algebra
· Probability, Ratios and Rates
MATH TILES
Math Tiles are an activity that challenges students to use number tiles to solve basic mathematical operations. Math Tiles was an important part of the 4th grade curriculum and will continue to supplement the 5th grade math program. The concepts include: multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, balanced equations, fractions, decimals, simple algebra, and more. The booklets vary in difficulty to ensure an appropriate level for each student. Math tiles are significantly more challenging in 5th grade, so they are completely optional this year and are encouraged primarily as enrichment.
MATH PROJECTS
Another optional enrichment recourse for students is monthly math projects. These projects are long-term, multi-week, projects that take critical thinking and creativity skills. Students have the option of working on these projects both in class and at home.
