Encounters: Creative Writing

Honolulu Museum of Art

Welcome

Welcome all volunteers leading Encounters Tours at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, the Honolulu Museum of Art started a special fellowship to bridge two seemingly distant collections of art. The culmination of this fellowship created Encounters Tours, which highlights the connections between European and Philippine Art. The weekday and weekend versions of the tour cover essentially the same content, but emphasize different goals. The versions try to engage diverse constituencies with varying interests.

Every Sunday between April 3rd - August 14th, 2016, the Museum offers FREE Encounters - Sunday Tours. Geared for church groups, Catholic parishes, families and Sunday School classes, the Sunday Tours emphasize the power of faith and religion. Volunteers from the local Filipino and Catholic communities are strongly encouraged to enliven this “Sunday Funday” tour with personal stories and experiences.

Tuesday – Friday mornings, based on case-by-case school requests, the Museum offers FREE Encounters - Creative Writing Tours. Aligned to DOE literacy and social studies benchmarks, the tour caters to students 5th grade and older. Unlike Sunday tours, this weekday tour follows a defined structure with mandatory writing activities.

A sincere mahalo goes to our volunteers, for bringing passion, voice, and life to delivering tour content. Your time and dedication continue our mission to build community through art.
