Shawn Eichman Art in the Time of Chaos walk-through video

Main Ideas of this exhibition:

•The rapid pace of China’s modernization has paradoxically revealed the past as new archeological discoveries are unearthed during construction

•The invasion of North China by foreign nomadic peoples resulted in a remarkable period of multi-ethnicity and cultural exchange that fostered cultural growth

•Despite the importance of the Six Dynasties, most of its material culture was lost throughout later history, and modern archeology has made possible for the first time in centuries a glimpse into this critical time

•The Six Dynasties was a golden age that saw the emergence of painting and calligraphy as recognized art forms for the first time, the growth of sculpture through Buddhism, and the development of ceramics as an important industry

•The longest period of fragmentation in China’s history, the war and turmoil of the Six Dynasties also resulted in an unprecedented age of innovation and creativity
