MAJOR SHOWS/GALLERIES/COMMISSIONS: Exhibits at: MOMA, SFMOMA, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. A 1997 recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Achievement Award, 2002-the United States representative to the São Paolo Bienal in Brazil. 2007-Time’s 100 most Influential People (Artists/Entertainers) amongst others.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Most famously, Cut Paper (silhouettes). She has also used other media such as: drawing, painting, colored light projections, shadow puppetry and film animation.
CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION: Kara uses an old fashioned, genteel form of art to depict her concerns about sexuality, violence and subjugation.
SUBJECT MATTER/THEMES/CONCEPTS DEALT WITH: SlaveryIntegration...historical & personal. She moved to Atlanta from California when quite young and had to deal with a community not fully integrated.
